Tennessee pushed top-ranked Texas to the final play before falling 20-17 at Neyland Stadium. A 57-yard punt return by Qua Moss tied the game in the third quarter, and Faizon Brandon found Mike Matthews for a 30-yard touchdown with 1:22 remaining.
The Volunteers recovered the ensuing onside kick but could not complete the comeback. Tennessee's defense held Texas to 61 rushing yards and produced 10 tackles for loss and six sacks. The Vols host Auburn on October 3.
