With the No. 1 Texas Longhorns heading into the season’s only bye week before traveling to Dallas to face off against the Oklahoma Sooners in the Cotton Bowl, head coach Steve Sarkisian was willing to field injury questions on Monday with nine days until the next SEC-mandated player availability report.
Senior running back Hollywood Smothers dressed but did not play against Tennessee on Saturday. Suffering from a lower-leg injury, the 5’11, 196-pounder was officially listed as questionable on the injury reports released on Wednesday and Thursday before being upgraded to probable on Friday evening’s report and coming off of it entirely prior to the game.
“He was an emergency for us Saturday. I felt like he probably could have gone, but what Raleek [Brown] had done in practice and Derek [Cooper] getting himself back, if I could have gotten out of that game with him not re-injuring himself, I think it would behoove us for the remainder of the season, and so we were able to do that. I think he’ll be fine in a couple weeks when we play OU,” Sarkisian said.
On a 30-yard reception early in the third quarter, junior wide receiver Cam Coleman suffered an injury and did not return. Sarkisian said that Coleman suffered a bruise tailbone when he landed on the natural grass at Neyland Stadium.
“He’s doing fine. He got banged up on Saturday,” Sarkisian said. “It’s nothing serious.”
The Texas head coach did not address the injury status of sophomore tight end Nick Townsend, who has been out since sustained a knee injury against Ohio State, and sophomore defensive lineman Justus Terry, who suffered a toe injury in pregame warmups before the win over the Buckeyes.
