SEC football has moved from October to November. We will discuss the huge SEC games for Week 10 later this week, but for now, let's look back on Week 9 and what it told us about the state of the conference:
1 - Georgia looked like Georgia
If there's a favorite in the SEC at the start of November, it's still Georgia. This conference still runs through Kirby Smart. The Ole Miss game is just around the corner, but again, we're focusing on Week 9. Georgia's defense showed up against Florida. That might not seem like a huge achievement, but Florida has been all over the place this season. Florida, without its starting quarterback, won on the road at Texas. Florida wasn't good against the Dawgs, but Florida can be good when everything falls into place. Georgia being able to crush Florida after a week off shows that the team had an aberrationally bad day against Auburn and is more likely than not to rise to the top of the heap when the season is over. This is how it usually goes. Until proven otherwise, Georgia is still the team to beat.
2 - Ole Miss isn't entirely convincing
The final score said Ole Miss 45, Auburn 15, but this was a 17-15 game midway through the third quarter. Ole Miss isn't playing consistently enough to merit trust. The Rebels have to be much better overall and much better in first halves of games. They started poorly at Texas and did not recover. They have to play a 60-minute game, and that hasn't happened often enough for them this year.
3 - Shane Beamer solidifies position heading into 2027
Shane Beamer will not be fired by South Carolina. The Gamecocks were extremely fortunate to beat Tennessee a week earlier. The Vols had the boot on the throat several times in that game and somehow let South Carolina off the hook in each instance. South Carolina escaped with a very lucky win and then carried the good vibes into Oklahoma one week later, dominating the Sooners in a game which was never particularly close. The financial situation at South Carolina is such that Beamer won't be canned under these circumstances. It doesn't mean the program is fixed, but it does mean this program won't be part of the coming coaching carousel cycle in the SEC.
4 - Brent Venables has to start over
Brent Venables made the playoff last year. Then everything crumbled at Oklahoma. We will see if Venables can rebuild OU from the ground up. The Sooners didn't just falter on offense this season; their team wasn't nearly as resilient this year as it was in 2025. There's a lot of roster reconstruction the Sooners must engage in. Venables has his work cut out for him.
5 - Arkansas needs administrative changes
After the loss to Missouri crushed any ideas that the Hogs were turning the corner, we have to get back to the big picture in Fayetteville: Unless or until Hunter Yurachek is fired, nothing will meaningfully change for Arkansas football.
