SEC Football Power Rankings Week 7: Georgia overtakes No. 1; Kentucky climbs after LSU upset

Week 6 of the college football season was wild, with plenty of upsets, close finishes, and blowouts, especially across the SEC. No. 7 Indiana nearly suffered an upset at home against Nebraska but escaped with a 20-17 victory. Other notable games outside the SEC included North Carolina defeating No. 25 Pittsburgh, 21-17, and Georgia Tech upsetting Duke at home, 28-25.

As for the SEC, Week 6 had a little bit of everything, from blowouts to near upsets and dramatic finishes. Oklahoma delivered one of the biggest surprises of the weekend, hitting a game-winning field goal to defeat No. 1 Texas, 27-24, in the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners picked up a much-needed victory that could help turn their season around.

Meanwhile, Kentucky continued to prove its doubters wrong under first-year head coach Will Stein, pulling off a thrilling 35-34 overtime upset over No. 10 LSU at Kroger Field. The Wildcats made several explosive plays, capitalized on key opportunities and finished the game with a successful two-point conversion by quarterback Kenny Minchey.

Arkansas also nearly picked up its first SEC victory of the season, keeping things close against Tennessee before falling 24-17 at home. South Carolina, meanwhile, earned an impressive 38-19 road victory over No. 16 Florida, handing the Gators their second consecutive loss after a 4-0 start.

With all of that in mind, let’s get into the rankings.

SEC Football Power Rankings Week 7

No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (6-0, 4-0)

Georgia takes over the No. 1 spot in this week’s SEC Power Rankings after defeating Alabama in Tuscaloosa in a matchup that lived up to the hype.

With the Bulldogs entering the game ranked No. 2 and Alabama sitting at No. 6, both teams had plenty to prove. Although six regular-season games remain, a victory in a matchup of this magnitude could go a long way toward securing a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Alabama held a 14-10 lead at halftime, but Georgia’s defense took control after the break, allowing just a field goal in the second half. The Crimson Tide failed to score in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs did enough on both sides of the ball to secure the win.

Kirby Smart has continued to build one of the SEC’s most consistent programs, and Alabama has historically been a difficult opponent for him to overcome. After Saturday’s victory, Georgia has another major win to add to its résumé.

The Bulldogs earn the No. 1 spot this week and continue to look like one of the strongest teams in the country.

No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1, 3-1)

Before taking on Georgia, Alabama looked like one of the best teams in the country and arguably the strongest team in the SEC.

Quarterback Keelon Russell had been playing at a high level, leading some to believe he could enter the Heisman Trophy conversation. However, Russell struggled to produce his best performance against Georgia, and the Crimson Tide’s offense was unable to find its rhythm in the second half.

Alabama’s defense also struggled to contain the Bulldogs after halftime, ultimately allowing Georgia to pull away. The loss was a disappointing result for a team that had looked so impressive entering the matchup.

Despite the setback, Alabama remains one of the SEC’s top teams. If the Crimson Tide can respond and win the rest of their games, they will reach the College Football Playoff.

For now, Alabama falls to No. 2 in this week’s rankings.

No. 3 Texas Longhorns (4-1, 1-1)

The Red River Rivalry lived up to the hype, but Texas came away with a disappointing loss to Oklahoma after failing to close out a game that was there for the taking.

Throughout the season, the Longhorns have looked like a team capable of competing with anyone, although they have occasionally struggled to put opponents away. That inconsistency finally caught up with them against the Sooners.

Quarterback Arch Manning threw two costly interceptions, giving Oklahoma opportunities to stay in the game and eventually pull off the upset. The Sooners capitalized by making the game-winning field goal, handing Texas its first loss of the season.

Manning will need to improve his consistency if the Longhorns want to avoid dropping more games and remain in contention for the College Football Playoff.

Despite the disappointing result, Texas still has plenty of talent and time to recover. The Longhorns will look to bounce back against a struggling Florida team at home, although they cannot afford to overlook the Gators.

No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners (3-2, 1-1)

Oklahoma has struggled to find consistency throughout the season, particularly on offense, but the Sooners delivered when it mattered most against Texas.

The defense stepped up against the Longhorns, keeping the game within reach and creating opportunities for the offense to pull off the upset. Kicker Tate Sandell then came through with the game-winning field goal, giving Oklahoma a memorable victory over its biggest rival.

Although the Sooners still have plenty to improve upon, beating Texas is a significant result for a team that needed a confidence boost. The win also gives Oklahoma momentum heading into the next stretch of its schedule.

The Sooners earn the No. 4 spot in this week’s rankings after taking down the No. 1 team in the country.

Now, Oklahoma will turn its attention to Kentucky, which is coming off a thrilling overtime upset over LSU. The Wildcats have proven they can compete with the SEC’s best, setting up another important matchup for the Sooners.

No. 5 Kentucky Wildcats (5-1, 3-1)

Will Stein continues to prove doubters wrong in his first season as Kentucky’s head coach, as the Wildcats have already exceeded many of the expectations placed on them entering the year.

Some analysts, insiders, and fans expected Kentucky to win around four games, with six victories representing a more optimistic outcome. Instead, the Wildcats are already 5-1 after pulling off a dramatic 35-34 overtime upset over No. 10 LSU at Kroger Field.

Saturday’s game had just about everything, including explosive plays, turnovers, missed field goals, and plenty of momentum swings. Kentucky kept fighting, even when it appeared LSU might take control, and eventually put itself in position to win in overtime.

Quarterback Kenny Minchey delivered when it mattered most, converting the game-winning two-point attempt on a quarterback draw. The successful conversion sent Kroger Field into a frenzy and gave Stein one of the biggest victories of his young coaching career.

The win further establishes Kentucky as a team capable of competing with some of the SEC’s best programs. The Wildcats still have plenty of challenges ahead, but their performance against LSU shows why they deserve a spot in the top half of these rankings.

Kentucky will now look to keep its momentum going against Oklahoma on the road. If the Wildcats can deliver another strong performance, they could continue climbing the SEC Power Rankings.

No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels (4-1, 2-1)

Ole Miss continues to look like a dangerous team in the SEC after returning from its bye week with a dominant 52-17 victory over Vanderbilt.

The Rebels controlled the game against the Commodores, showing the offensive firepower that has made them a difficult opponent this season. Their only loss came against Florida, but that result came without star running back Kewan Lacy, who was unavailable for the matchup.

Since then, Ole Miss has continued to show that it can put points on the board against quality competition. The Rebels have the talent to make things difficult for the rest of the conference, especially if their offense continues to produce at this level.

Although Ole Miss still has work to do, the Rebels remain firmly in the conversation among the SEC’s better teams.

If they can maintain this level of play and avoid another disappointing result, Ole Miss has the potential to climb even higher in the coming weeks.

No. 7 Missouri Tigers (5-1, 2-1)

Missouri continues to prove that it deserves to be taken seriously after defeating Texas A&M, 27-6, at home.

The Tigers controlled the matchup and handed the Aggies another disappointing loss in what has been a difficult season for Texas A&M. Missouri’s offense continued to show its potential, while the defense did its part to keep the Aggies from mounting a comeback.

Missouri’s only loss came against Mississippi State, when the Tigers had opportunities to tie the game but ultimately came up short. Since then, Missouri has shown that it can respond and compete with teams throughout the conference.

The Tigers have the offensive firepower to give opponents problems, and their performance against Texas A&M was another example of what they can accomplish when things are clicking.

Missouri earns the No. 7 spot this week and will look to keep building momentum as the SEC schedule continues.

No. 8 Tennessee Volunteers (5-1, 2-1)

Tennessee’s offense continues to struggle at times, but the Volunteers have found ways to win thanks to a defense that has consistently stepped up.

That was once again the case against Arkansas, as Tennessee narrowly escaped with a 24-17 victory on the road. The Razorbacks entered the matchup looking for their first SEC win of the season and nearly pulled off the upset against a Volunteers team that has not always looked convincing offensively.

Tennessee did enough to secure the victory, but the performance raised more questions about the offense moving forward.

Quarterback George MacIntyre appears to have a chance to remain the starter for the rest of the season after showing promise in recent appearances. Faizon Brandon has also dealt with injury concerns, making the quarterback situation something to monitor.

The Volunteers remain 5-1, but they will need more consistency on offense if they want to compete with the SEC’s top teams. For now, Tennessee stays at No. 8 in the rankings.

No. 9 Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1)

Mississippi State was on a bye this week, but the Bulldogs move down one spot as other teams strengthened their résumés with important victories.

The Bulldogs have still put together a promising season, although their most recent performance was a 56-23 loss to Alabama. That game showed the gap Mississippi State still needs to close against some of the SEC’s top programs.

Even so, the Bulldogs have demonstrated enough potential to remain in the middle of the rankings. A strong response in their next game could help restore some momentum.

Mississippi State will face LSU on the road next, giving the Bulldogs an opportunity to take advantage of a Tigers team coming off a painful overtime loss to Kentucky.

That matchup will be an important test for both teams as they look to get back on track.

No. 10 South Carolina Gamecocks (3-3, 1-3)

South Carolina has had several opportunities to improve its record this season, and the Gamecocks finally delivered an impressive performance against Florida.

Coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Kentucky, South Carolina responded by defeating the Gators, 38-19, on the road. The victory was a much-needed result for head coach Shane Beamer and a team that has struggled to find consistency in SEC play.

Quarterback LaNorris Sellers had an outstanding performance, throwing four touchdown passes as South Carolina’s offense repeatedly found ways to move the ball. Florida’s defense had few answers for the Gamecocks, who controlled the matchup and earned a convincing victory.

The win gives South Carolina something to build on after a frustrating stretch of games. However, the Gamecocks will need to maintain that momentum if they want to climb higher in the rankings.

Tennessee comes to town next, setting up another important SEC matchup. Playing at home could give South Carolina an advantage, but the Gamecocks will need another strong performance to come away with a victory.

No. 11 LSU Tigers (4-2, 1-2)

LSU takes a significant fall in this week’s SEC Power Rankings after suffering a stunning overtime loss to Kentucky.

Entering the season, many believed the Tigers were back among the conference’s elite after a dominant 51-10 victory over Clemson in the opener. Since then, however, LSU has shown some inconsistencies that have raised questions about its ability to compete with the SEC’s best teams.

The Tigers did dominate Texas A&M, winning 35-6, but the Aggies have struggled throughout the season. LSU also suffered a 32-24 road loss to Ole Miss in a wild game that marked Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford.

This past weekend, LSU traveled to Lexington looking for a victory but instead left with a 35-34 overtime loss to Kentucky. The Tigers had opportunities to take control of the game but could not consistently capitalize on them.

Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey ultimately converted the game-winning two-point attempt, sealing one of the biggest wins of the season for the Wildcats. LSU’s defense could not come up with a stop when it needed one most.

For Kiffin and the Tigers, the focus now shifts to bouncing back against Mississippi State at home. LSU still has time to recover, but another loss would make its path toward the College Football Playoff significantly more difficult.

No. 12 Florida Gators (4-2, 2-2)

After starting the season 4-0, Florida looked like a team that could make some noise in the SEC under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall.

The Gators picked up several impressive victories early in the season, including a dominant home win over Ole Miss. However, the momentum has disappeared over the past two weeks, with Florida suffering consecutive losses to Missouri and South Carolina.

Florida first fell 45-17 on the road against Missouri before dropping a 38-19 decision to South Carolina. The Gators struggled to contain the Gamecocks’ offense, allowing LaNorris Sellers to throw four touchdown passes.

The back-to-back defeats have raised questions about Florida’s ability to sustain its early-season success. The Gators still have talent, but they need to find answers quickly if they want to remain competitive in the SEC.

Florida’s next challenge will be a home matchup against Texas. The Longhorns are coming off a loss to Oklahoma and will be eager to respond, making this a difficult spot for the Gators.

No. 13 Auburn Tigers (3-2, 1-2)

Auburn was on a bye this week but drops one spot as other SEC teams made stronger statements over the weekend.

The Tigers have shown flashes of potential this season, but their offense has struggled to produce consistently. That inconsistency has made it difficult for Auburn to keep pace with some of the conference’s stronger teams.

The bye week provided an opportunity to regroup and address those issues before returning to action.

Unfortunately for Auburn, the schedule does not offer much breathing room. The Tigers will travel to face Georgia, which is coming off an impressive victory over Alabama and currently sits atop these rankings.

Auburn will need a much-improved offensive performance to have a chance against the Bulldogs. If the Tigers cannot find more consistency, it could be another difficult afternoon.

No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies (3-3, 1-3)

Texas A&M has been one of the SEC’s most disappointing teams this season after reaching the College Football Playoff last year.

The Aggies have struggled to reproduce last season’s success, with problems on both sides of the ball contributing to a frustrating start. Their latest setback came against Missouri, where Texas A&M suffered a 27-6 road loss.

The offense struggled to generate points, while the defense could not do enough to keep Missouri from controlling the game. The result was another disappointing performance for head coach Mike Elko and his team.

Texas A&M now finds itself at 3-3 and needs to turn things around quickly if it hopes to salvage its season.

The Aggies will face The Citadel next, giving them an opportunity to get back in the win column and build some confidence. A convincing performance could provide a much-needed boost, but Texas A&M will need to show more consistency as the SEC schedule continues.

No. 15 Vanderbilt Commodores (3-3, 0-3)

Vanderbilt remains winless in SEC play after suffering a 52-17 home loss to Ole Miss.

The Commodores have struggled to find consistency this season, particularly following the departure of quarterback Diego Pavia. Five-star true freshman Jared Curtis has shown flashes of potential, but he is still adjusting to the college game and will need time to develop.

The loss to Ole Miss was another difficult result for Vanderbilt, which struggled to slow down the Rebels’ offense. The Commodores have talent to build around, but they need to make significant improvements if they want to compete more consistently in the conference.

Vanderbilt will have another opportunity to earn its first SEC victory when it faces Arkansas at home. The Razorbacks are also searching for their first conference win, setting up an important matchup for both teams.

If the Commodores can take care of business, they could finally get a much-needed boost in the standings.

No. 16 Arkansas Razorbacks (2-4, 0-3)

Arkansas remains at the bottom of the SEC Power Rankings after narrowly missing an opportunity to earn its first conference victory against Tennessee.

The Razorbacks played one of their more competitive games of the season, keeping the Volunteers within reach before ultimately falling 24-17 at home. Arkansas had a chance to pull off the upset but could not do enough down the stretch.

It has been a difficult season for first-year head coach Ryan Silverfield, whose team has struggled to find consistency on both sides of the ball. Although the performance against Tennessee was more competitive, the Razorbacks still need to show they can finish games against SEC opponents.

Arkansas will look to get back on track against Vanderbilt on the road. With both teams still searching for their first SEC victory, the matchup represents a significant opportunity for the Razorbacks to turn things around.

Looking further ahead, Arkansas will need continued investment and support for its program, including in NIL, to improve its ability to compete in the conference. Until the Razorbacks can build more consistency and depth, climbing out of the bottom of these rankings will remain a challenge.
