SEC Football Power Rankings: Kentucky climbs after Week 8 upsets

College football continues to be wild each week, and Week 8 was no different.

Several teams in the Top 25 suffered losses, including No. 2 BYU, which was shocked by UCF in a 39-31 double-overtime victory for the Knights. Cincinnati also pulled off an upset against No. 8 Texas Tech, earning a 37-24 win at home. Meanwhile, No. 11 Tennessee fell to unranked South Carolina on the road, 27-24, while No. 19 Texas upset No. 7 Ole Miss at home, 34-27.

There were plenty of other surprises across the country, but those were among the biggest results of the weekend. With so many ranked teams falling, Kentucky could be in line to move into the top 10 of the AP Top 25 after defeating Vanderbilt, 34-17, inside Kroger Field.

With all of that in mind, let’s get into the rankings.

SEC Football Power Rankings Week 9

No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1)

Georgia stays at No. 1 despite having a bye week. The Bulldogs are coming off a heartbreaking 27-23 loss to Auburn at home, but they remain one of the best teams in the SEC.

Despite having one loss on their record, Georgia has shown enough throughout the season to maintain the top spot. The Bulldogs will have an opportunity to get back on track as they prepare for their next matchup.

No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats (7-1, 5-1)

Kentucky continues to show that no matter what happens early in a game, the Wildcats will keep fighting and find ways to win. That has been evident throughout the season, including their comeback from a 17-0 deficit against South Carolina to win 35-34.

The Wildcats did it again this past weekend, overcoming an early 10-0 deficit against Vanderbilt to secure a 34-17 victory. Kentucky’s defense once again played a significant role in the comeback by forcing turnovers and helping the team regain control of the game.

If Kentucky’s offense can put together a complete performance for four quarters, this team could become even more dangerous. With seven wins and an impressive resume under first-year head coach Will Stein, the Wildcats deserve to move up to No. 2 in the SEC Power Rankings.

No. 3 LSU Tigers (6-2, 3-2)

LSU has been impressive under first-year head coach Lane Kiffin. While some may consider the season disappointing with two losses already on the schedule, the Tigers have faced difficult challenges along the way.

One of those losses came against Kiffin’s former team, Ole Miss, in an emotional matchup. The other came on the road against Kentucky, where the Wildcats’ fans created a difficult environment and helped make things challenging for LSU in an overtime defeat.

Despite those setbacks, the Tigers bounced back in a big way by taking care of business against Auburn on the road, earning a 38-14 victory. If LSU can continue to build momentum, it has the potential to remain one of the SEC’s top teams.

No. 4 Texas Longhorns (5-2, 2-2)

Despite a somewhat shaky season that includes losses to Oklahoma and Florida, Texas has shown that it can compete with some of the best teams in the country. The Longhorns have earned impressive victories over Ohio State at home and Alabama on the road.

Texas continues to deliver in big games, but the Longhorns must do a better job of taking care of business and not allowing opponents to climb back into contests. That nearly became an issue again Saturday against No. 7 Ole Miss, as the Rebels mounted a late comeback before falling short, 34-27.

It was still an impressive victory for the Longhorns, who deserve to move up in the rankings after taking down one of the SEC’s top teams.

No. 5 Ole Miss Rebels (5-2, 3-2)

Ole Miss has put together several impressive victories this season against teams such as Louisville, LSU and Missouri. However, the Rebels have also suffered a blowout loss to Florida on the road and recently came up short against Texas despite nearly completing a comeback.

Ole Miss has shown that it can compete with some of the best teams in the country, but the Rebels must start winning the games that matter most if they want to remain near the top of the SEC.

Their next matchup against Auburn at home presents an opportunity to get back on track. A convincing victory would help the Rebels regain some momentum as the season continues.

No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers (6-2, 3-2)

Tennessee had an opportunity to take care of business on the road against South Carolina but came up short in a 27-24 loss. The Volunteers have been inconsistent throughout the season, and Saturday’s defeat was another example of their struggles.

One thing keeping Tennessee competitive has been its defense, which has delivered several impressive performances. Without that defensive production, some of the Volunteers’ games could have been much less competitive.

Tennessee still needs more consistent quarterback play if it hopes to compete with the SEC’s best teams. The Volunteers will have two weeks to prepare for their matchup against Kentucky, giving them time to regroup and work toward getting back on track.

Despite the loss, Tennessee remains one of the SEC’s better teams and stays in the top half of the rankings.

No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2, 4-2)

Alabama came away with a 31-20 victory over Texas A&M at home, but the Crimson Tide got off to a slow start and had to climb back from an early deficit to secure the win.

Alabama has delivered several blowout victories this season, but the Crimson Tide have yet to put together a signature win that makes them an obvious top-five team in the SEC. They have the talent to compete near the top of the conference, but consistency remains important moving forward.

After a bye week, Alabama will have an opportunity to make a statement against LSU. If the Crimson Tide can take care of business in that matchup, they could make a strong case for moving into the top five and potentially the top three.

No. 8 South Carolina Gamecocks (4-3, 2-3)

After struggling early in SEC play with three consecutive losses to Mississippi State, Alabama and Kentucky, South Carolina has started to find its footing.

The Gamecocks first delivered an impressive 38-19 road victory over Florida before taking down No. 11 Tennessee at home, 27-24, on a walk-off field goal. Those back-to-back victories have given South Carolina some much-needed momentum.

If the Gamecocks can continue playing at this level, they have a chance to remain in the top half of the SEC Power Rankings. However, their next matchup will be a difficult one, as they travel to face Oklahoma on Saturday.

No. 9 Missouri Tigers (5-2, 2-2)

Missouri had a bye week but dropped a couple of spots after several teams below it picked up impressive victories. The Tigers are also coming off a disappointing 31-3 loss to Ole Miss, which raised questions about how they will perform against the conference’s top competition.

Missouri still has an opportunity to climb back up the rankings, starting with its upcoming road matchup against Arkansas. The Razorbacks have struggled throughout the season, giving the Tigers a chance to pick up an important victory.

A strong performance would help Missouri regain some momentum and strengthen its position in the middle of the SEC.

No. 10 Florida Gators (5-2, 3-2)

Like Missouri, Florida is coming off a bye week and drops two spots after several other SEC teams picked up impressive wins.

The Gators are still coming off an important 27-24 road victory over Texas, which showed that they can compete with some of the best teams in the country. However, Florida must continue to prove that it can perform consistently against top competition.

The Gators will face Georgia on Saturday in a major test. If Florida can deliver another impressive performance against one of the SEC’s top teams, it could make a case for moving back into the top half of the rankings.

No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners (4-3, 2-2)

Oklahoma desperately needed a victory after losing to Kentucky at home, and the Sooners responded by defeating Mississippi State, 23-15, on Saturday.

The victory gives Oklahoma an opportunity to build some momentum after a difficult stretch. However, the Sooners still have plenty of work to do if they want to climb back into the top half of the SEC Power Rankings.

Their next matchup against South Carolina at home will be an important test. If Oklahoma can take care of business against the Gamecocks, it could begin putting together the kind of winning streak needed to move up the rankings.

No. 12 Auburn Tigers (4-3, 2-3)

Auburn has shown flashes of being a great team this season, including its impressive victory over Georgia. However, the Tigers have struggled to maintain that level of play consistently, and Saturday’s matchup against LSU was another example.

Auburn suffered a 38-14 loss on the road, struggling to keep pace with the Tigers on both sides of the ball. It was a disappointing performance for a team that had recently picked up one of the biggest victories of the season.

The Tigers will need to find more consistency if they hope to turn things around. Unfortunately, their schedule does not get any easier, as they travel to face Ole Miss next week.

No. 13 Texas A&M Aggies (4-4, 2-3)

Texas A&M entered the season with high expectations after making the College Football Playoff last year, but the Aggies have struggled to live up to them.

The Aggies fell to Alabama, 31-20, in a game in which they struggled to maintain their early momentum. Despite having the talent to compete with the SEC’s best teams, Texas A&M has not consistently delivered the performances needed to stay in the conference’s upper tier.

With its College Football Playoff hopes fading, Texas A&M must focus on winning games and becoming bowl-eligible. The schedule does not get any easier after the bye week, as the Aggies will travel to face a South Carolina team that has won two straight games.

No. 14 Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-3, 2-3)

Mississippi State is beginning to follow a familiar pattern, starting the season strong before struggling as the schedule gets tougher.

The Bulldogs picked up an impressive victory over Missouri at home, but they have since lost three consecutive games against Alabama, LSU, and Oklahoma. Saturday’s 23-15 loss to the Sooners was another setback for a team that had looked promising earlier in the season.

Mississippi State must find a way to turn things around before the losing streak grows any longer. The Bulldogs’ next matchup against Texas on the road will be a difficult challenge, and another loss could push them even further down the rankings.

No. 15 Arkansas Razorbacks (3-4, 1-3)

Arkansas was on a bye week after picking up a victory over Vanderbilt in its previous matchup. The Razorbacks have struggled for much of the season, but the win over the Commodores gave them an opportunity to build some momentum.

Despite the victory, Arkansas remains at No. 15 in the SEC Power Rankings. The Razorbacks will have a chance to improve their standing when they face Missouri at home.

It will be a difficult matchup, but an upset victory could help Arkansas take a step forward and give the team something to build on for the remainder of the season.

No. 16 Vanderbilt Commodores (3-5, 0-5)

Vanderbilt remains the only SEC team without a conference victory after falling to Kentucky, 34-17, on Saturday.

The Commodores got off to a promising start, taking a 10-0 lead over the Wildcats. However, Vanderbilt struggled to maintain that momentum, and Kentucky eventually took control of the game in the second half.

Things have not been the same without Diego Pavia, as the Commodores continue to work through the growing pains of true freshman five-star quarterback Jared Curtis. Curtis still has plenty of time to develop, but replacing a player like Pavia is no easy task.

Vanderbilt will have a bye week to regroup before traveling to face Mississippi State. It will not be an easy matchup, but the Commodores need to find a way to earn their first SEC victory, especially after falling to Arkansas the previous week.

With the season moving along, Vanderbilt’s focus must be on finding consistency and building toward a stronger finish.
