Rece Davis believes the LSU Tigers could make some serious noise in the College Football Playoff.

With two losses, the No. 15 Tigers face an uphill climb to make the 12-team tournament. Yet Davis thinks Lane Kiffin’s squad would be a serious postseason contender if given the opportunity.

The College GameDay host discussed LSU as a team to monitor on Tuesday’s The Pat McAfee Show.

“What I’m looking at is not so much who is Indiana from ’24, but who’s Miami from last year,” Davis said. “That if they get in, watch out. They can win the whole thing. To me, that’s LSU.”

Davis believes LSU has rebounded from “little hiccups” against Ole Miss and Kentucky. The SEC program followed the Kentucky loss with a 31-0 win over Mississippi State and a 38-17 blowout at Auburn.

Sam Leavitt has played much better in those victories. After throwing eight interceptions in the first six games, the starting quarterback has posted 676 passing yards and seven touchdowns without a pick in the last two games.

That development has Davis believing the Tigers could reach a higher ceiling and vie for a championship.

“Watching LSU the last couple of games, it feels like Leavitt’s getting comfortable. He’s taking care of the football a little better than he was earlier, and they feel like they’re coming,” Davis said. “I think LSU is the team. Now, they have some tests. They’ve got Alabama. They’ve got Texas. But if they get there, I’d watch out, because they certainly are capable of winning the whole thing if they get in.”

As Davis also noted, LSU faces a difficult path to the CFP. The Tigers play three straight games against ranked postseason hopefuls, hosting the Crimson Tide and Longhorns before going to Neyland Stadium to play Tennessee.

LSU likely must win all those games and a season-ending contest at Arkansas to stay in the CFP picture. That quest starts against Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 7.
