Purdue put together its most complete performance of the season Saturday night, taking down Minnesota 41-13 at Ross-Ade Stadium. The Boilermakers dominated the line of scrimmage, made plays on defense, and looked like a team that is starting to figure things out.
Minnesota came into the game at 4-1, but Purdue controlled the game for most of the night and handed the Gophers their first Big Ten loss. Here are the grades from Saturday’s win.
Offense: A
This was exactly what Purdue needed to see from its offense. Fame Ijeboi had a monster night, rushing for 195 yards and three touchdowns against his former team. Ryan Browne was effective both through the air and on the ground, throwing for 159 yards and a touchdown while adding 81 rushing yards and another score. Purdue finished with 305 rushing yards and 464 total yards, consistently winning up front and keeping Minnesota’s defense on its heels.
The Boilers averaged more than six yards per play and scored 41 points without turning the ball over. It’s hard to ask for much more than that. The passing game wasn’t asked to do everything, and that’s a good thing when the running game is rolling like this.
Defense: A
I don’t think anyone expected Purdue to hold Minnesota to just 13 points and 27 rushing yards, but that’s exactly what happened. The Gophers were held to only three points in the first half, and Jojo Hayden came up with a huge interception right before halftime to keep Purdue’s momentum going.
Minnesota found a little life in the third quarter, scoring 10 points and briefly making things interesting, but the Boilermakers responded with a touchdown and shut the door in the fourth. Holding a Big Ten opponent to 27 rushing yards is impressive, especially against a team that entered the game with plenty of confidence.
The defense still gave up some passing yards, but when you limit an opponent to 13 points and force a turnover, you’ve done your job.
Coaching: A
Barry Odom and his staff deserve a lot of credit for this one. Purdue came out ready to play, established the run early, and never let Minnesota get comfortable. The offensive game plan leaned into the team’s strengths, and the defense did an outstanding job taking away Minnesota’s ability to run the football.
Even when the Gophers made their push in the third quarter, Purdue didn’t panic. The Boilermakers answered with a touchdown and pulled away in the fourth. After the disappointment of the earlier losses, this was the kind of response Purdue fans wanted to see.
One win doesn’t solve every problem, but putting together a convincing performance against a 4-1 Minnesota team is a great sign.
Final Verdict
Purdue gets an A for Saturday night. The offense ran the ball at will, the defense dominated the line of scrimmage, and the coaching staff had the team prepared to play. Fame Ijeboi stole the show, Ryan Browne continued to show his dual-threat ability, and the defense delivered one of its best performances of the season.
Now comes the challenge: can Purdue carry this momentum into next Friday’s matchup with Washington?
For one night, though, Purdue fans have plenty to be excited about.
