Texas A&M's 2026 season has been nothing short of a disaster under third-year coach Mike Elko, who has all but taken full responsibility for the Aggies' 3-3 start, including 1-3 in SEC play. After falling to Missouri 27-6 on Saturday, Elko and his talented but underperforming roster return to Kyle Field to host The Citadel in Week 7.
Through the first six games, Aggies Wire contributor Jarrett Johnson graded the offense and defense more than fairly based on each unit's performance, especially at quarterback, and Marcel Reed's second full starting season has been both confusing and highly disappointing and should result in Mike Elko making a change to backup Brady Hart or freshman Helaman Casuga.
While the Aggies' revamped offensive line has had its issues, better quarterback play, especially given the consistent separation from A&M's wide receiver rotation, would have resulted in one or two more wins against Kentucky, LSU, or Missouri.
Looking ahead, Texas A&M will face Alabama and South Carolina on the road, Tennessee at home, Oklahoma on the road, and Texas at home to finish out the regular season. Needing three more wins to make a bowl game, it's hard to see this team finishing better than 4-8 or 5-7 unless Marcel Reed flips the script and suddenly plays better.
While the sky may be falling for most of the Aggie fan base, ESPN host Scott Van Pelt and "Stanford" Steve Coughlin sent a message to College Station regarding the 2026 season woes, discussing the state of college football amid the NIL-based chaos with zero answers, and how roster turnaround, which is affecting the Aggies after a record 10 players were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, is also affecting several other Power Four programs this season.
Mike Elko's primary focuses in the next few weeks are getting through the next six games, attacking the transfer portal, and potentially making a change at OC amid Holmon Wiggins' struggles and finding Marcel Reed's replacement.
"You're going to have a s**t season... are you going to fire Mike Elko that brought you to the playoff last year? NO."
