Pittsburgh is making a quarterback change ahead of its Week 7 matchup against Boston College, turning to true freshman Corey Dailey over fifth-year senior Holden Geriner after his disappointing first start against North Carolina, CBS Sports’ Matt Heinitz reported Saturday. Head coach Pat Narduzzi has decided to make the switch as Pitt looks to maintain its 5-1 record following a 21-17 defeat to the Tar Heels.
Geriner, a fifth-year senior, completed 27 of 44 passes for 219 yards without a touchdown while throwing two interceptions versus North Carolina. He also rushed for minus-1 yard. Despite initially receiving Narduzz’s backing after the loss, Geriner will give way to Dailey, who made his collegiate debut against Bucknell.
The quarterback change follows the season-ending ACL injury suffered by Mason Heintschel, who took over the starting role last season after Narduzzi benched Eli Holstein. The Panthers are once again placing their offense in the hands of a true freshman, making it the second straight season that Pat Narduzzi and offensive coordinator Kade Bell have named a first-year player their starting quarterback.

Dailey arrives with an impressive high school resume. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound quarterback was a four-star recruit from Texas who played four years at Seguin High School. He finished his high school career with 9,138 passing yards and 100 touchdowns while setting school records for total touchdowns, passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions and total yards. He ranked No. 13 among quarterbacks in his recruiting class, according to 247Sports.
After graduating early, Dailey enrolled at Pitt in January 2026. His first collegiate action came during the Panthers’ blowout win over the Bison, when he completed three of five passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. That limited appearance offered an initial look at his passing ability, but his upcoming assignment will involve facing an ACC opponent’s starting defense.
There is more to Dailey’s challenge than arm strength alone. He must demonstrate that he can identify defensive formations before the snap, make appropriate reads and adjust plays or protection schemes when necessary. His performance versus the Eagles will provide Pittsburgh’s coaching staff with a clearer assessment of his readiness for an expanded role.
The Panthers enter the contest looking for answers after losing Heintschel and dropping their first game with Geriner as the starter. While Boston College enters the matchup at 2-3, Dailey faces a much stiffer test than he did in his debut against Bucknell.
Pitt’s game versus Boston College is scheduled for noon at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, with ESPN2 carrying the broadcast. If Dailey performs well, he could retain the starting position for the remainder of the 2026 season.
