Sam Leavitt and the now No. 18 LSU Tigers avoided a two-game drought in Week 7 of the 2026 college football season, jumping to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play after a 31-0 blowout win over Parker Puckett and the previous No. 16 Mississippi State Bulldogs. Now, LSU will look to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive in Week 8, hitting the road to face Byrum Brown and the Auburn Tigers.
Leavitt struggled to begin his first season in Baton Rouge, but has improved his play after the last few weeks immensely. Through seven games, the former Arizona State and Michigan State quarterback has completed 148-of-211 passes for 1,785 yards, 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions, adding 270 yards and another seven scores on the ground.
But the matchup against Mississippi State may have been Leavitt’s best with LSU, at least through the air, completing 31-of-38 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns in the shutout win, his first game without a turnover this year.

Leavitt’s performance in Week 7 earned him an 81.4 grade on Pro Football Reference (PFF), among the highest-rated quarterbacks in the nation. And the LSU star was also named to the PFF SEC Team of the Week. However, he was not named to the PFF National Team of the Week, with the quarterback honors going to Wake Forest Demon Deacons junior Gio Lopez.
Only one other player on LSU joined Leavitt in the SEC Team of the Week, with edge rusher Jordan Ross earning a 92.0 PFF grade after tallying six tackles, a sack, 2.5 tackles for loss and a pass deflection. But overall, Leavitt has a 90.7 grade for the season, ranking among the top ten quarterbacks.
Other notable players to make the PFF SEC Team of the Week for Week 7 include Tennessee Volunteers running back DeSean Bishop and Texas Longhorns edge rusher Colin Simmons. Even Mississippi State cornerback Jett Jefferson earned a spot on the team despite the Bulldogs allowing 31 points to LSU.
