The No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers enter their matchup against Minnesota with a 7-1 record and remain firmly in contention for a second consecutive national championship under head coach Curt Cignetti. Despite suffering their first defeat of the season against Ohio State, Indiana has maintained its position among the country’s leading contenders.

And well, Pat McAfee believes they have all the ingredients to win the national championship for the second time in a row. Speaking on College GameDay, McAfee revealed exactly why he believes the Hoosiers can win the title.

“Oh funny you guys are saying all this,” he said. “To be the man, you got to be beat the man, and that man is boom! A little bit of a layup there. Is coach Cignetti still the coach of the Indiana Hoosiers? Is the defence still like remarkable? On offense, do they have a top-five, maybe wide receiver in Charlie Becker on the outside? One of the best transfers out of Michigan State and wide receiver Marsh on the other side? Turbo and Beebee on the backfield? Yeah.”

The Hoosiers rank second nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 12 points per game through eight contests. They have also established themselves as one of the country’s strongest run defenses, surrendering only 73.1 rushing yards per game and approximately 2.14 yards per carry.

”I think everything Indiana needs to run it back they got, so even though they lost to Ohio State there by six inches and they had a tough one against Michigan where they weren’t able to get much done, I think Indiana still has all the fixings to hoist the title yet again,” McAfee concluded.

The defensive front has played an important role in Indiana’s success, with Mario Landino, Tyrique Tucker, Tobi Osunsanmi and Stephen Daley leading the line. However, the offensive production remains an issue.

The Hoosiers are averaging 33.6 points and 419.6 total yards per game this season, but their recent scoring output has fallen considerably. Ultimately, their championship prospects will depend heavily on whether the offense can rediscover the production they produced earlier in the campaign.
