Oregon State is taking extra precautions ahead of its game against San Diego State on Saturday.
The Aztecs have been dealing with a mumps outbreak within the football team. There have been over a dozen confirmed cases in the program as the number of positives has grown from mid-September.
Beavers coach JaMarcus Shephard said Monday that he had not personally been contacted by SDSU or the Pac-12 about the outbreak and was unaware if either the school or conference had contacted anyone else at Oregon State. He also noted that players on the team would have the chance to get a booster shot of the MMR vaccine ahead of the game.
"We are just taking our own precautions at this point in time," Shephard said at his Monday news conference. "We're making available for our guys to get a booster shot related to the mumps. Most of us have actually had that shot — in order to go to school you pretty much had to have that shot early on and ... And so this is just an opportunity for us to get a booster on that make sure we keep our team safe. At the end of the day, this is in my opinion, I see it similar like COVID. We gotta do what we gotta do to keep our team safe. Because that is the No. 1 priority of football organizations, or at least it should be."
Mumps is a respiratory virus that can be spread through close contact. San Diego State was significantly shorthanded for its Pac-12 opener in Week 5 against Texas State, but won the game 31-29 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Oregon State is on a three-game win streak after losses to Houston and Texas Tech to open the season. The Beavers are an early contender for the Pac-12 title and a potential College Football Playoff berth behind an offense that is averaging over 7 yards a play and nearly 500 yards a game. Oregon State scored 56 points against Colorado State in Week 5 in a game that led to the first-half dismissal of Colorado State defensive coordinator Tyson Summers.
