For the second week in a row, Ole Miss blew out an SEC opponent now resoundingly answering its one loss of the season as it beat Missouri 31-3.
Ole Miss (5-1, 3-1 SEC) allowed a first quarter field goal on the Tigers (5-2, 2-2 SEC) first drive of the season and then the Rebels defense dominated from there. The offense meanwhile stacked up nearly 500 yards of offense with Trinidad Chambliss putting on a clinic.
The senior quarterback went 20/36 passing for 241 yards, three touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown that put the game away. Ole Miss’ win extended its home winning streak to 15 games, which is now the longest active streak in the nation.
In the Grove on Saturday morning, I pulled up to unload our supplies, and there was some good confidence from the friends and random fans I talked to between bites of fried chicken and sips of beer. I heard nearly everyone say, “all we have to do is stop the run, and we can win this.” I was less optimistic thinking Austin Simmons could have a massive game even if the Tigers run game was stopped.
The run game for Missouri was absolutely jammed up on Saturday with only 39 total rushing yards on 26 carries, and Simmons did pile up a ton of yards (25/44 for 339 yards, INT) though could never find the endzone. The Ole Miss defense totaled two sacks and five tackles for loss making several key plays to keep the Tigers off schedule the entire game.
On offense, Kewan Lacy looked like his old self racking up 122 yards on 16 carries, and back up RB Makhi Frazier added 101 yards as well. It was the first game since 2022 with Ole Miss recording two players with more than 100 rushing yards.
With the upsets all across college football this week, the Rebels are poised to potentially move up to the top 5 at the halfway point of the season. A lot of football left to be played, and next up will be a long ride to Austin for a date with the top 10 Texas Longhorns.
But this morning is about tasting some of that leftover cold fried chicken on a biscuit, basking in back to back blowout SEC wins, and the belief this team could do some very special things in the coming weeks.
