The Oklahoma Sooners and the No. 1 Texas Longhorns meet in the Cotton Bowl for the 2026 Red River Rivalry. The Sooners enter the game in must-win mode after dropping road games to Michigan and Georgia.

Now, Oklahoma returns to their home-away-from-home in the heart of the Texas State Fair to take on the undefeated Longhorns.

You don't have to go back far to find an unranked team earning the win in the matchup. Just last year, the Longhorns were unranked after suffering an upset loss to the Florida Gators. They beat the Sooners 23-6. Oklahoma's offense struggled as John Mateer threw three interceptions less than three weeks removed from hand surgery.

Heading into the matchup with Texas, Mateer is completing 66.1% of his passes for 883 yards and eight TDs. But turnovers have been an issue. He had two fumbles and an interception against Georgia and has turned the ball over in each of the Sooners' last three games. If Oklahoma wants to pull off an upset in the Cotton Bowl, Mateer will have to play more like the guy that beat Michigan and Auburn to start the 2025 season.

But it isn't all on Mateer. Oklahoma needs a more productive rushing attack to take the load off its starting quarterback. The Sooners rank No. 131 in the nation in running the football this season and need to find a way to be better than what they've done in the first four games, where they've averaged 99 yards per game.

And it's going to take a stellar defensive effort from the Sooners as well. If Oklahoma wants to have a chance to win, they need to play inspired on the defensive side of the ball. Limit big plays to wide receivers Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo, and Emmett Mosley, and contain a rushing attack averaging nearly 150 yards per game.

It's a rivalry game. And anything can happen. Can the Sooners find some magic on the State Fair midway?
