The Oklahoma Sooners hoped this season would be the year they ended their near-three-decade national championship drought. However, after a 2-2 start, their season hangs in the balance.
A big reason for the struggles this year has been the offensive line. Oklahoma returned four starters from last year's College Football Playoff-bound unit. However, the group hasn't played a game together this season due to injuries. That includes star left tackle Michael Fasusi, who hasn't played since the first game.
Oklahoma ranks No. 131 in rushing offense at 99 yards per game. The Sooners also ranked tied for No. 97 in sacks allowed per game with 2.25. Quarterback John Mateer raved about the offensive line's improvement during the bye week and believes their best football is ahead.
"I think they had a great week," Mateer said via OU Insider. "Those are the guys I went out to eat with a lot. We still love each other. We still have each other's backs. That hasn't wavered at all. You can see it, and these guys are ready to get after it."
Mateer's confidence in the offensive line could be an important sign for Oklahoma heading into the biggest game of its season. The group has dealt with injuries and a lack of continuity, but the bye week provided valuable time to improve communication and build confidence before returning to action.
That progress will be tested immediately against the No. 1 Texas Longhorns on Saturday. If the offensive line can carry its momentum and provide Mateer with more time while creating running lanes, it could give Oklahoma a much better chance to control the game and pull off the upset.
