Oklahoma football was brought to its knees after getting embarrassed by Georgia at the end of September, but the Sooners may have found the antidote they desperately needed in Dallas on Saturday. Brent Venables’ defense rattled Arch Manning in the second half, John Mateer made a couple of timely completions and Tate Sandell drilled a 47-yard field goal as time expired to clinch an exhilarating 27-24 victory over No. 1 Texas in Cotton Bowl Stadium.

The Sooners did not solve all their problems and still struggled to manufacture offense, but this Red River Rivalry conquest allows them to move forward with tremendous momentum. Down 17-7 at halftime, and with its season arguably on the line, Oklahoma composed itself and made the necessary adjustments. Turnovers define this comeback.

Oklahoma had already tied the score before Manning tossed his first interception, but the defense secured the W. The Longhorns quarterback threw an ugly pick while drifting away from pressure, and senior safety Peyton Bowen returned it all the way back for a 42-yard, go-ahead touchdown with 10:07 left in the fourth quarter. Manning, to his credit, immediately responded with a fabulous TD drive. But the Sooners were not done making game-altering plays.

Oklahoma brought the pressure once again, forcing the famous signal-caller to take another unnecessary risk in the final minute of action. Courtland Guillory expertly stepped in front of Cam Coleman and gave his squad a chance to steal this one late.

John Mateer, who posted a modest 155 passing yards, stepped up amid all the criticism and hammered a 20-yard pass to Isaiah Sategna III. That was enough for All-American kicker Tate Sandell.

Oklahoma football is very much alive. The Sooners still have to prove they can take care of business on the road — they will visit three ranked teams before season’s end — but this is obviously a massive result.

The burden is on Brent Venables and company to decide if this victory will just be a fun moment in Red River Rivalry history, or a legitimate turning point in the 2026 campaign.
