The 2026 high school football season has reached Week 2 across the state of Ohio.

NFL Academy, based in the United Kingdom, visits Akron on Friday, Aug. 28, to play Archbishop Hoban.

In Week 1, Hoban lost 28-24 to West Orange in Winter Garden, Florida., and NFL Academy won 44-24 over Marietta (Georgia) in Loughborough, England.

What to know about the NFL Academy (UK) football team

NFL Academy has players from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America and South America.

NFL Academy finished with 498 yards of offense, including 344 rushing yards, according to John Bednarowski of the Marietta Daily Journal. NFL Academy's offensive linemen average 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds. German OL Niko Kampas (6-7, 295) has committed to play at Tennessee. German LB-DE Adeola Werner (6-4, 244) has committed to Texas Tech.

Canadians Nathan Morris, Andrew Gomon and Viktor LaChambre are players to watch on offense. Morris had 15 carries for 137 yards and two TDs last week. Gomon ran for 68 yards and two TDs. LaChambre, a QB committed to Rice, completed 9 of 19 passes for 154 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and ran for 83 yards.

Steve Hagen is in his fourth season as the head coach of NFL Academy. He was an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns (2001-2004), (2009-2012) and New York Jets (2013-2015) in the NFL. He has coached at more than a dozen college football programs, including Notre Dame (1989-1990) and the University of North Carolina (2007-2008).

What to know about the Hoban football team

Hoban's defense had its hands full last week as West Orange QB AJ Chung completed 21 of 33 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns, according to Chris Hays of the Orlando Sentinel. Chung threw a 15-yard TD pass to Mikel Victor, a 43-yard TD pass to Jayden Ammons and a 30-yard TD pass to Yuto Kawamura-Johnson. Ammons added a rushing TD.

Hoban QB Israel "Major" Cribbs ran for 176 yards and a touchdown on seven carries against West Orange. Cribbs' 56-yard TD run and a PAT by Jeremy Hammel gave Hoban a 24-14 lead with 3:02 to go in the third quarter. Cribbs also had an 89-yard run to set up Jaiden Daniels' 6-yard TD, Kahlil Diming contributed a 5-yard TD run and Hammel made a 55-yard field goal.

Tim Tyrrell is in his 14th season as the Hoban coach and 25th overall season as a head coach, with stints at St. Thomas Aquinas in Ohio and Chaminade Madonna in Hollywood, Florida. Tyrrell has a 151-27 record at Hoban and a 216-78 record overall. He has guided Hoban to the OHSAA playoffs 11 years in a row, has won five state championships (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020) and finished state runner-up three times (2021, 2022, 2023).

Hoban football’s impact players

Daniels, Johnson, Riley, Pickering and Caleb Williams are seniors to watch. ... "Jaiden Daniels is a three-year starter at cornerback," Hoban coach Tim Tyrrell said in July. "John Johnson is back at wide receiver and he will also play some defensive back, too. He was our leading receiver from the last two years. Devanaire Riley is a returning defensive lineman. He will play more defensive end than inside this year. Rylee Pickering is returning at center and Caleb Williams is returning at tackle. Jaiden, John, Devanaire, Rylee and Caleb are great leaders and they also have a ton of playing experience. They have had good, bad and ugly. All of them. All of them are at least three-year starters. Rylee is a four-year starter as an offensive lineman. They have a ton of experience and all of them will be four-year lettermen. They have played numerous positions and will be asked even more as seniors. They have played in big games." ... Daniels is a Ball State recruit, Johnson is a Bowling Green recruit and Williams is a Buffalo recruit.

What's new with Hoban football in 2026

Cribbs is projected to start at quarterback after dealing with an injury last season and with the graduation of Nick Kinsey and Payton Cook, who both played QB. ... "He is very, very athletic," Tyrrell said of Cribbs in July. "Unfortunately, he got hurt last year. We kind of saw him as the starter about halfway through the season, but he had an injury and never got the chance to come back. He got injured during the East game. Bad coaching. I put him in at receiver and he caught a touchdown pass and got injured. He is a smart kid. Obviously, the son of an NFL player [Joshua Cribbs]. He has been around football is whole life. He is very knowledgeable about the game. He is very athletic and can throw and run." ... Hoban moves on without All-Ohio RB-LB Brayton Feister and All-Ohio DL-LB Brayton Feister, who have transferred to Massillon. RB Jance Henry, a Bowling Green recruit, moved back to Pennsylvania and is at Moon Area. ... "Kahlil Diming will get carries at running back," Tyrrell said. "We have a lot of young kids who are good and very athletic. ... Jaiden Daniels will get some carries as a speed kid, kind of like what we did with Xavier Williams a few years ago. Terrell Daniels is a sophomore who will get carries. He played a lot at the end of the games last year as a freshman. London Beasley, an eighth grader who is going to be a freshman, will remind you of DeaMonte Trayanum size-wise. He's a big kid who can run the football." ... DL Kyron Harris, OL Cad Meeker and LB Maddox Burt are also intriguing freshmen. ... Look for sophomore WR Mario Manningham Jr., junior WR Malachi Cook, sophomore WR Landon Mikoletic, junior WR Dominic Daetwyler, junior LB Giovonie Wyatt, junior LB Bryce Rhoden and sophomore DB Alfred Wood to make an impact. ... Hoban welcomes two notable transfers: junior QB-LB George Camuso and sophomore RB Keontae Hollis Jr. ... Camuso previously played at Ursuline. Hollis played at Berkner in Richardson, Texas as a freshman. Hollis ran for 728 yards and 10 touchdowns on 64 carries, and had 87 receiving yards and two receiving TDs. His father, Keontae Hollis played football at the University of Akron in 2013 and 2014. ... Carter Welo returns as Hoban's offensive coordinator after serving in that role from 2019-2022. Matt Saunders remains as an assistant coach after being the OC from 2023-2025. Tyrrell will be the defensive coordinator after Marcus Wattley left for his second stint as St. Vincent-St. Mary head coach.

Hoban football’s outlook

Tyrrell said "the two strong parts of the team are offensive line and defensive line." ... Hoban returns six starters on offense — linemen Pickering, Williams, Zander Thomas and Sean Mantell, tight end Ryland Oliphant and Johnson at wide receiver. ... The Knights bring back six starters on defense — linemen Riley and Kiren Green and backs Daniels, Diming, Carlos Gordon and Gavin Baluch. ... Jeremy Hammel returns as the kicker and punter. ... "We lost some big-time names [to graduation and transfer], but this is a unique group," Tyrrell said. "... This is the most unified group of individuals we have had in a long time. This is a very tight-knit group of kids and they are very talented, but a lot of people don't know their names. It is 2015 Hoban. A lot of people didn't know their names until after they won a state championship. There are a lot of kids like that on this team that are very good football players, just not household names yet." ... Hoban has made the OHSAA playoffs 11 years in a row, winning five state championships (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020) and finishing state runner-up three times (2021, 2022, 2023).
