Ohio State football came into the regular season as the No. 1 team in the nation, and the Buckeyes looked every part of that during the first three quarters of their highly-anticipated clash against No. 4 Texas on Saturday night.

Thanks to a few early Texas turnovers and a whole lot of Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State raced out to a 23-3 lead and silenced the Longhorns crowd in Austin. However, the Ohio State offense stalled out and Arch Manning caught fire to lead Texas to a miraculous 24-23 win.

After the game, Ohio State head coach Ryan Daystated the obvious about his team’s collapse and what needs to happen moving forward, via Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors.

“I think we played well for three quarters, and didn’t play well enough in the fourth quarter. That’s the bottom line,” Day said. “We know that’s the biggest part of this season: We have to win the fourth quarter… We all have to take accountability.”

Ohio State was seemingly just a play away from sealing Texas’ fate many times in this game, but Day and company were never able to slam the door. Manning converted a few big fourth downs in the fourth quarter, and Ohio State missed a key field goal that would have pushed the lead back to two scores late.

While this loss will sting and probably cost Ohio State its No. 1 ranking, there are still some positives for Day and company to take out of this game. Smith looked like the best player in college football as expected, and Bo Jackson already looks like he will be one of the best running backs in the Big Ten. On defense, Ohio State was capable of nearly blanking a talented Texas offense despite losing a number of stars to the NFL last offseason.

The Buckeyes now get what should be two manageable games against Kent State and Illinois at home before they head on the road for a tough Big Ten test on the road against No. 21 Iowa on Oct. 3.
