The Week 3 game between North Carolina and Clemson has been delayed due to inclement weather.

The game was halted in the fourth quarter due to lightning strikes in the area surrounding Memorial Stadium.

Before the delay, the Tar Heels were leading the Tigers, 17-15, and were sitting at Clemson’s seven-yard line and threatening to score with 8:11 left.

North Carolina-Clemson weather delay updates

UPDATE: Chapel Fowler of The State Newspaper is reporting that the weather is just getting worse and the delay has been extended until at least 5 p.m. ET.

As we’ve already noted, the weather is expected to be bad for the next two or three hours after 5 p.m., so we could be looking at a 7-8 p.m. start time.

Sit tight, everyone, it’s going to be a while.

UPDATE: According to Noah Weiskopf of TarHeel 247, reporters are being told the weather delay is “likely gonna be a while” and the “best-case scenario is a 5 p.m. start, but even that doesn’t look too promising.”

As we wrote in our previous update, the weather is supposed to get worse at 5 p.m. and could stay that way for two to three hours after, so this might become a night game at this point.

UPDATE: According to Rodd Baxley of the Fayetteville Observer, the weather could get worse by 5 p.m. ET and may not let up until about 7 or 8 p.m., so we might be here a while if the game doesn’t resume soon.

Players from both teams and fans in the stands have been evacuated out of precaution.

NCAA rules state there must be 30 minutes without a lightning strike within eight miles of the venue before players on both teams can return and begin warming up.
