MIAMI, Fla. – The No. 3 Miami Hurricanes will host the Florida State Seminoles at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday with several five-star recruits in attendance; however, a last-minute invitation appears to have been sent out.
Five-star offensive tackle and Texas A&M commit Mark Matthews is reportedly looking to go watch the in-state rivalry matchup, according to 247Sports.
The Fort Lauderdale native attends St. Aquinas High School (7-0), who face Monarch High School on Friday night at Coconut Creek (Fla). Matthews would be part of a pristine guest list: five-star safety Casey Barner, five-star wide receiver Brysen Wright, five-star edge rusher Asher Ghioto, five-star wide receiver Jaylen Addai, five-star cornerback Nasir Richardson, five-star offensive tackle Maui Tonata, and five-star defensive tackle Prince Che – all of whom are part of the 2028 high school graduating class.

It’s an opportunity for the Hurricanes to persuade Matthews to reconsider joining the Coral Gables program. He chose to commit to the Aggies rather than staying close to home in mid-May. However, a lot has changed in the college football world since then, especially for head coach Mike Elko. The Aggies are currently 3-3 (SEC 1-3) through the first six games of the season.
A disappointing start for the College Station (TX) program, whose hopes of making the College Football Playoffs are on life support.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are 5-0 (ACC 3-0) and have displayed dominance on both sides of the field. The Coral Gables program has the highest-scoring offense in the Football Bowl Subdivision, averaging 49.6 points. The success comes with a reconstructed offensive line led by position coach Alex Mirabal.
When losing four starters from last season, there were concerns about how the Hurricanes would recover. Without exploring the transfer portal aggressively and trusting developed talent, it’s paid off. Left tackle Samson Okunlola, center Ryan Rodriguez, and right tackle Matthew McCoy have thrived in expanded roles.
If Matthews ends up attending, he will have a great view of the Hurricanes working the line of scrimmage, potentially another dominant outing. He has an opportunity to join an elite recruiting class with several other five-stars, such as cornerback Donte Wright, athlete A’mir Sears, wide receiver Nick Lennear, and edge rusher Jaiden Bryant.
Matthews' rankings (247Sports Composite):
- 4th Nationally
- 1st Offensive Tackle
- 1st Florida
Head coach Mario Cristobal is among the nation’s top recruiters and has successfully flipped other highly touted high school talent before. He could be on the brink of another on Saturday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. E.T. and will be nationally televised on ESPN.
