CBS Sports put a fitting label on Florida’s trip to Texas this weekend: the biggest “Anxiety Bowl” in college football.

Tom Fornelli ranked Florida at Texas as the most anxiety-inducing matchup of Week 7, ahead of Penn State-Michigan, Nebraska-Oregon, Arkansas-Vanderbilt and Virginia-SMU. The reason is simple: both teams badly need a win.

Florida’s urgency is obvious. The Gators were 4-0 and inside the top 10 just a few weeks ago after beating Ole Miss 52-28. Since then, they have lost consecutive games to Missouri and South Carolina by a combined 47 points.

Fornelli wrote that the Gators now have their “backs against the wall,” with their College Football Playoff hopes hanging by a thread. He believes the Gators’ most realistic path back into the race is to beat either Texas or Georgia, then win out. A loss in Austin would leave Florida needing to beat Georgia to keep that path alive.

Texas is hardly entering the game comfortably, either. The Longhorns are coming off a 27-24 loss to Oklahoma, a game in which a blocked punt, an Arch Manning pick-six, and poor field position cost them. CBS Sports noted that Texas is still 4-1, but another loss would put its postseason goals in serious danger.

That makes Saturday more than just another conference game. For Florida, a third straight loss would turn a 4-0 start into 4-3 with Georgia still looming. For Texas, losing at home to a reeling Florida team would bring back the same questions that followed last season’s loss to the Gators.

So, yes, “Anxiety Bowl” feels about right.
