The day is finally here for Houston Cougars football. This was the matchup that was circled on the calendar when the schedule came out. Houston is taking on arguably its biggest Big 12 rival on Friday night in Lubbock, Texas on national TV for the Big 12 opener.

It's No. 22 Houston against No. 13 Texas Tech in one of the biggest conference games of the season. Both teams are 2-0 entering the contest and one will walk away in much better position in the Big 12 race.

Houston leads the overall series 18-17-1, but Texas Tech has won the last seven matchups. Houston last won in 2009 and last won in Lubbock back in 1990.

This is the first time both Houston and Texas Tech have matched up as ranked teams since 1989. Houston won that contest 40-24. The Cougars have won the last five ranked matchups going back to 1979.

Texas Tech also leads the series in Lubbock 9-8. The Cougars faced the No. 11 ranked Red Raiders last season and lost 35-11. Houston is looking for a different result this time around.

The Red Raiders are coming off a 35-24 win at Oregon State while the Cougars beat Southern 77-6.

Houston received to start and picked up two first downs on the ground with senior running back Makhi Hughes and senior quarterback Conner Weigman with his legs. He also found senior wideout Amare Thomas for a first.

The big play of the drive was a 21-yard catch and run by Hughes on a pass from Weigman on third-and-two. Houston settled for a 31-yard field goal from redshirt sophomore kicker Jonathan Dimas.

Texas Tech quarterback Thomas Castellanos threw an interception on the first offensive play to junior defensive back Will James. He was trying to throw the ball away, but landed right in James' hands.

Houston goes to redshirt junior running back Re'Shaun Sanford II and he picks up a first down. Weigman's number is called and he converts a huge third down with his legs. He then followed up with a touchdown pass to Thomas on third-and-eight.

The Red Raiders quickly went three-and-out, but had a huge drop from TE Terrance Carter Jr on third down.

Houston had forced another long third down, but Red Raiders quarterback Will Hammond found Kenny Johnson for a 28-yard gain. Hammond then found Johnson for 35-yard touchdown.

Houston seemed to have a promising drive going after multiple first down pick-ups, but Weigman was strip sacked by Adam Trick at the Texas Tech 35-yard line.

The Cougars made a big stop on defense after the Red Raiders picked up one first down. Senior linebacker Jaden Yates came in for the sack.

Texas Tech responded with a couple of 20-yard plays and then found the endzone on a three-yard touchdown run by Castellanos.

Houston responded with a huge drive and Weigman threw a perfect 46-yard touchdown pass to redshirt sophomore receiver Koby Young who made an incredible one-handed catch.

Texas Tech was quickly moving down the field, but senior cornerback Jalen Mayo made an acrobatic interception with one hand that basically ended the half.

Texas Tech came out with a strong start to the second half and running back J'Koby Williams exploded for a 29-yard touchdown run.

The Cougars also went on a long drive and picked up multiple first downs, but had to settle for another field goal.

It seemed like the Red Raiders were continuing their momentum, but Houston got a big stop on fourth down.

A holding penalty hurt the Cougars on their following drive and Weigman was sacked on third down when it seemed like it might have been able to pick it up.

Texas Tech goes on a long drive almost 90 yards down the field, and running back Cameron Dickey punches it in for the Red Raiders' touchdown as they gain some distance over Houston.

Houston picked up one first down, but had three straight incompletions at a critical point in the game.

Texas Tech had a chance to end the game, but just got one first down before Houston forced the incompletion on third down. That gave Weigman and the offense one last opportunity.

It was a remarkable last drive for Houston, and the Cougars went 88 yards in 10 plays in just 1:55. Weigman led an outstanding last effort and he found redshirt junior tight end Patrick Overmyer for the 10-yard touchdown. Weigman had to scramble for the two-point conversion and came up agonizingly short by less than half a yard.
