Now, we get movement.

It wasn't quite chaos, but the Big Ten got a noticeable shake-up in Week 4, with upsets in State College and Seattle, a near miss in Bloomington and a heavyweight fight won emphatically in Los Angeles.

Contenders are beginning to emerge, some from unexpected places. UCLA is surging. Wisconsin delivered the signature win Luke Fickell needed. And things look bleak out in College Park.

Let's check on the league this week.

1. Ohio State (3-1, 1-0)

Last week (2): 42-19 win vs. Illinois

This week: at Iowa, Oct. 3

What to know: Four games in, pole position in the race for Big Ten player of the year belongs to Jeremiah Smith.

2. Indiana (4-0, 1-0)

Last week (1): 29-23 win vs. Northwestern

This week: at Rutgers, Oct. 3

What to know: We're giving Northwestern credit later in the rankings. But while nobody should panic in Bloomington, it's clear the defending champs have some things to work on.

3. Iowa (4-0, 1-0)

Last week (3): 20-19 win at Michigan

This week: Ohio State, Oct. 3

What to know: How real is Iowa's College Football Playoff candidacy? If the Hawkeyes can find a way past Ohio State on Saturday, they could be favored in every game they play after that.

4. Oregon (3-1, 1-0)

Last week (7): 41-27 win vs. USC

This week: Bye

What to know: Dan Lanning's team delivered the perfect response in a prove-it game at USC. Now attention shifts to UCLA in two weeks, and to Dante Moore's health — or Dylan Raiola's readiness.

5. UCLA (4-0, 2-0)

Last week (9): 54-3 win at Maryland

This week: Bye

What to know: We've asked for two years who might be "the next Indiana." UCLA looks like this season's best candidate. Worry about Oregon next week. For now, just appreciate the turnaround Bob Chesney is overseeing in Westwood.

6. Nebraska (4-0, 1-0)

Last week (10): 31-13 win at Michigan State

This week: Maryland, Oct. 3

What to know: Time will tell us just how much weight to put on the win at Michigan State. But Nebraska took care of business in a game that called for it. Anthony Colandrea continues to deliver behind center.

7. USC (4-1, 1-1)

Last week (4): 41-27 loss vs. Oregon

This week: Washington, Oct. 3

What to know: The Trojans appeared to want to make Oregon a statement game. They will not care for the statement it made. Now one of two West Coast Playoff hopefuls might get eliminated from the discussion Saturday night in Los Angeles.

8. Northwestern (2-1, 0-1)

Last week (11): 29-23 loss at Indiana

This week: Penn State, Oct. 2 (Friday)

What to know: Chip Kelly seems to be unlocking the potential inside Aidan Chiles, and Penn State looks like it picked a bad time to need a pick-me-up game. Northwestern opens its new stadium Friday night.

9. Michigan (3-1, 0-1)

Last week (8): 20-19 loss vs. Iowa

This week: at Minnesota, Oct. 3

What to know: One-more-second jokes aside, a lot of concerns about Michigan were validated by Iowa's win Saturday in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines' trip to Minnesota becomes a matchup of two mercurial teams.

10. Wisconsin (3-1, 1-0)

Last week (15): 24-20 win at Penn State

This week: Michigan State, Oct. 3

What to know: It's funny how one result can reframe a team. Wisconsin rallies from down 17 to win at Penn State and suddenly the Badgers become the team whose only loss came in a hung-in-there-awhile opener against top-10 Notre Dame.

11. Penn State (3-1, 0-1)

Last week (5): 24-20 loss vs. Wisconsin

This week: Northwestern, Sept. 25 (Friday)

What to know: Blowing a three-score lead at home will dampen the honeymoon for any coach. Penn State's next three (at Northwestern, USC, at Michigan) will make or break Matt Campbell's first season in State College.

12. Minnesota (3-1, 1-0)

Last week (14): 27-24 win at Washington

This week: Michigan, Oct. 3

What to know: This result might have said as much about Washington as Minnesota, but Drake Lindsey (204 yards passing, 3 TDs) and the Gophers got their season back on track in Seattle.

13. Washington (3-1, 0-1)

Last week (6): 27-24 loss to Minnesota

This week: at USC, Oct. 3

What to know: We gave Washington too much credit for the way it was winning in some early season performances that now look even worse. With USC and Iowa up next, it doesn't get easier.

14. Illinois (2-2, 0-1)

Last week (12): 42-19 loss at Ohio State

This week: Purdue, Oct. 3

What to know: Won't penalize Illinois too much for losing to Ohio State specifically. But when you're already turning over your defensive staff four weeks in, that raises alarms.

15. Michigan State (2-2, 0-1)

Last week (16): 31-13 loss to Nebraska

This week: at Wisconsin, Oct. 3

What to know: The Spartans climb because of Maryland's crash, but the offense is a concern. Without a win in the next two weeks, Year 1 could get away from Pat Fitzgerald.

16. Maryland (2-2, 0-1)

Last week (13): 54-3 loss vs. UCLA

This week: at Nebraska, Oct. 3

What to know: Hard to pull anything good out of such an ugly loss. Mike Locksley might be running out of time.

17. Purdue (1-3, 0-1)

Last week (17): 49-10 loss to Notre Dame

This week: at Illinois, Oct. 3

What to know: Same story it's been for awhile: Unless or until this defense improves, Purdue is going to remain stuck where it has been for the best part of four years.

18. Rutgers (1-3, 0-1)

Last week (18): 58-7 win vs. Howard

This week: Indiana, Oct. 3

What to know: Beating Howard won't get Rutgers out of the basement. Battling Indiana the way the Scarlet Knights did Southern Cal would be a different story.
