Texas A&M coach Mike Elko entered his third season with high expectations after leading the Aggies to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, but several questionable offseason decisions, including elevating Holmon Wiggins and Lyle Hemphill as the team's new offensive and defensive coordinators, have led to a massive decline, as the Aggies sit at 4-4 and 1-4 in SEC play.

Senior quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, has also regressed, throwing eight touchdowns and eight interceptions and showing little to no improvement in his first eight starts. For various reasons, including backup QB Brady Hart not being ready to take over as the starter, Marcel Reed will continue as the starter until further notice.

Still, Reed hasn't been the only reason Texas A&M has failed to meet offseason expectations, as a rotating offensive line, too many coverage busts in the secondary, and poor tackling, especially from A&M's linebacker rotation, have led to several lopsided losses.

On Wednesday, during Mike Elko's weekly Aggie Football Hour appearance, the third-year coach offered an interesting explanation for the program's high expectations before the season, describing the message he gave the 2026 roster heading into the final four regular-season games.

"I told the guys, 'Listen, we had high expectations for where this thing could go, and obviously we haven't met those, but there's still a massive difference between 4-8 and 8-4.'

"So when you say there's nothing to play for, in my opinion, there's a lot to play for. There's a lot to play for every single week in terms of continuing to invest in what we started this journey to be about."

The hope is that this statement rings true on Saturday when the Aggies face No. 21 South Carolina on the road after their bye, needing to play with physicality on both sides of the ball, while Marcel Reed must hit his high-percentage throws and replicate his first-half play during A&M's Week 8 road loss to Alabama.
