LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has made his position clear about a proposed SEC transfer rule that would force players moving between conference programs to sit out for one season, with the goal of discouraging schools from poaching players and reduce alleged tampering between member programs.
“I do have opinions,” Kiffin said Thursday on his coaches show. “That would be terrible. I mean, I can’t imagine a worse decision. It’s discussed that you could not take SEC transfers (unless they sit out a year), and so when a kid goes to transfer from the SEC, he can’t [stay] in the SEC. Well, he’s going to go to other conferences.
“So we would just be handing away a lot of players every year and limiting them in that they can’t go to the other 15 SEC schools that they’ve grown up fans of, or maybe in the same area where they’re from. They’d be forced to go to other conferences and play against us and play for other conferences. I joked today, I said the other conferences would celebrate that rule. It would be like in the AFC, there’s gonna be free agency coming up, but all AFC free agents, the other AFC teams can’t take when they become free agents. And they’d all go to the NFC.”

Kiffin believes other college football conferences would welcome the proposed restriction because it could make SEC talent more accessible to their programs.
The potential rule could have huge implications for the Tigers, considering the number of transfers Kiffin has brought into the program.
After leaving Ole Miss for LSU, Kiffin brought several players with him, including edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen, linebacker TJ Dottery and wide receiver Winston Watkins.
Other transfers from SEC programs have also contributed to the Tigers. Wide receiver Eugene Wilson arrived from Florida, edge rusher Jordan Ross transferred from Tennessee, and defensive tackle Malik Blocton joined from Auburn. Offensive lineman William Satterwhite, another former Tennessee player, and Arkansas transfer kicker Scott Starzyk have also played crucial roles.
Under the proposed policy, comparable moves between SEC schools could become more difficult if transferring athletes were required to spend a year on the sidelines. The restriction could therefore affect how programs construct their rosters through the transfer portal.
The proposal comes during broader discussions about the conference establishing and enforcing its own regulations.
In July, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey acknowledged that the league was exploring a self-governance approach as the NCAA faced limitations in enforcing its rules amid antitrust litigation.
LSU and Kiffin have already been involved in a dispute over eligibility for players who previously signed professional contracts. The SEC threatened substantial penalties over such additions, including a fine equivalent to 50% of a sport’s budget and a half-season suspension for the coach.
The dispute escalated into legal action involving the SEC, program officials and attorneys representing players seeking an additional year of NCAA eligibility. Kiffin has also criticized the conference’s decision to move to a nine-game league schedule.
SEC presidents are reportedly scheduled to discuss the proposed one-year residency requirement next week.
