The Texas Longhorns host the Florida Gators today at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in a must-win for both teams. The Longhorns are trying to bounce back from a second half collapse against Oklahoma last weekend in the Red River Shootout. Florida is trying to stop a two-game losing streak.

Texas quarterback Arch Manning and coach Steve Sarkisian have been heavily criticized over the past week for the the inability of an offense that, on paper, should be much better. The Horns offense has struggled much of the 2026 season, even though UT was No. 1 in the nation for a month.

The good news for the Longhorns is they have already faced the three toughest defenses on the schedule. The Gators have given up 83 points over the past two weeks.

A loss to Florida last year was the biggest reason Texas didn't make the College Football Playoff, so there is also an element of revenge on the Longhorns minds.

Florida Gators to start backup QB vs. Texas

11:42 AM ET, October 17 2026, Trey Luerssen

The Florida Gators will reportedly start backup quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. against Texas today. Starting Gators QB Aaron Philo will be a game-time decision.

Philo has been limited all week by a shoulder injury he suffered against South Carolina last Saturday in a 38-19 loss to the Gamecocks. This will be the first career start for Jones, who took most of the first team reps this week in practice.

The SEC releases its final official injury report 90 minutes before game time.

Texas defensive lineman Justus Terry and offensive lineman Jordan Coleman, both listed as probable all week, are not on today's report meaning they should be good to go.

Texas vs. Florida prediction

10:01 AM ET, October 17 2026, Trey Luerssen

I think Texas wins big. The offense will click better than it has all season. Manning will look the best he has all season and the offense puts some points on the board.

Defensively, Texas has another big day. Florida QB Aaron Philo is questionable, as are WRs Vernell Brown III and Bailey Stockton. The Gators will get some yards on the ground with super running back Jadan Baugh. But the passing game will be a mess.

If Texas is (still) a title contender, they need to use this game as a springboard for the rest of the season.

Final Score: Texas 37, Florida 10

Texas Longhorns and Florida Gators Injuries

10:00 AM ET, October 17 2026, Trey Luerssen

Texas defensive lineman Justus Terry is listed as probable. Terry has missed the past four games after suffering a toe/foot injury in warmups for the Ohio State game. He suited up last week for the Oklahoma game, but did not play. Presumably, Terry was dressed if needed in an emergency, similar to Hollywood Smothers against Tennessee.

Jordan Coleman is also probable. Offensive lineman Jaydon Chatman and wide receiver Kaliq Lockett are out for the Florida game.

On the Gators side of the report, the big news is starting quarterback Aaron Philo is listed as questionable. Philo hurt his shoulder last week in a 38-19 loss to South Carolina. The Bogart, GA native has been limited in practice this week.

Philo, who is a Georgia Tech transfer, has thrown for 1,341 yards and rushed for 104 yards so far this season. The junior has scored 12 total touchdowns with three interceptions in his first season as a starter.

The other two questionable players on the report are wide receivers Vernell Brown III and Bailey Stockton. Brown is reportedly trending towards playing against the Longhorns. The Gainesville native has 17 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns through four games this season.

Stockton had his best game of the year against the Gamecocks last week. He was named the Gators Wire offensive player of the week.
