Texas Tech freshman LaDamion Guyton isn’t supposed to be doing this yet.

At 17 years old, Guyton should still be finishing his senior year of high school. Instead, he’s already becoming a disruptive piece of one of college football’s most aggressive defenses.

Guyton was named the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Week after recording the first two sacks of his college career in Texas Tech’s 49-14 win over Sam Houston.

Both came after halftime, when the Red Raiders completely shut down the Bearkats.

Guyton finished with three tackles, two sacks and a quarterback hurry, flashing exactly why Texas Tech was so eager to get him to Lubbock a year early.

“It’s great to see Guyton show up,” head coach Joey McGuire said after the win.

The 6-4, 235-pound outside linebacker has now appeared in three games since making his debut at Oregon State. He’s totaled six tackles and also recovered a key fumble in Texas Tech’s win over Houston.

More importantly, he’s starting to affect quarterbacks.

Guyton has generated six pressures over the past two games, including three against Houston and three more against Sam Houston.

That already has him among Texas Tech’s team leaders despite his limited college experience.

His age makes the emergence even more remarkable.

Guyton was originally regarded as the No. 1 prospect in the 2027 recruiting class before reclassifying into 2026. He graduated early from Benedictine Military School in Georgia and joined the Red Raiders before preseason camp.

ESPN still rated him as high as the No. 6 overall prospect nationally after the move.

Now Texas Tech is seeing why.

Guyton’s performance helped the Red Raiders improve to 4-0, and the freshman will get another opportunity Saturday when No. 12 Texas Tech travels to Colorado for its first Big 12 road game of the season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on FOX.

The expectations surrounding Guyton were already massive before he arrived in Lubbock.

Two sacks into his college career, he’s starting to show those expectations might not have been big enough.
