For a little over 30 minutes this past Saturday, the Kentucky football team looked like they were going to spring the upset over Alabama. However, the Wildcats faltered in the second half, partly because of the Crimson Tide’s depth and self-inflicted mistakes. Now, for the team with the fourth toughest schedule in college football, it doesn’t get any easier. For the first time, head coach Will Stein goes on the road. Taking The Next Step

Kentucky did a lot of really good things in the first part of the game against the Crimson Tide. An interception return by big man Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace was certainly a highlight. In fact, the defense didn’t give up a touchdown until the third quarter.

Quarterback Kenny Minchey did some good things, and Stein’s offense looked promising. Unfortunately, it all fell apart as Minchey gave up a pick-six and had a fumble. Three total turnovers were a big reason why the Cats went from leading by four to losing by 28.

UK had 62 yards on the ground in the first half, but only two in the second. They had 147 total in the first half, but only 62 after the break. In addition, they’ve got to do better on third down. Against Alabama, they were 1-14 on third down. That won’t get it done against the top teams in college football.

Scouting The Aggies

Mike Elko’s club is coming off a College Football Playoff bid a year ago. So far in 2026, they’ve picked up where the left off, starting the year 2-0 and ranked ninth in the current AP poll. They started the year with a 50-0 win over Missouri State. Last Saturday, they broke open a close game, outscoring Arizona State 31-10 in the second half on the way to a 48-20 victory.

Quarterback Marcel Reed leads the Aggie attack. This year, Reed has completed 65 percent of his passes for 396 yards and five touchdowns. In addition, he’s been a big running threat in the past. However, he’s only gained 37 yards in 2026.

Reed’s two favorite targets are Mario Craver and Isaiah Horton. Craver has eight catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while Horton has seven receptions for 105 yards and leads the league with three touchdowns. When they run the ball, Rueben Owens is the main man with 112 yards and a score.

Minchey faced a tough defense last week, and it’s the same deal on Saturday. On the other side of the ball, a couple of linebackers lead the way. Noah Mikail and Ray Coney have a combined 25 tackles. They’ve also returned two interceptions for touchdowns. Limiting turnovers will be key for the Wildcats.

Series History

Saturday marks only the fourth time the Wildcats and Aggies have met on the gridiron. Three of the four meetings have been in College Station. The first two matchups came way back in 1952 and 1953. UK beat A&M 10-7 on the road, then the Aggies returned the favor, winning 7-6 in Lexington.

Texas A&M joined the SEC in 2012, and the two schools met again in College Station in 2018. In this one, the Aggies won 20-14 in overtime. In 2028, they’ll finally play in Lexington, a mere 16 years after moving to the SEC.

Who Wins On Saturday?

Playing in the SEC is never easy, especially with the new nine-game schedule. The Cats played well for 35 minutes against Alabama before running out of gas. Their reward? You travel to one of the toughest places to play in college football. Kyle Field will be rocking with 102,000 in attendance. It feels like Elko’s squad is flying under the radar. For Kentucky to have any chance to win, they must limit turnovers. However, A&M has forced six turnovers in the first two games. Hold onto the ball, and UK might have a chance. If not, it’s going to be a long day. Texas A&M plays LSU next Saturday. Could they be looking ahead to that one? In the end, it’s hard to find a path to a Kentucky victory.
