Jason Kelce enjoyed an incredible career in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, but not every player is so fortunate as to earn the kind of money the former centre did in their respective careers.

The current college system was described by Kelce as ‘the Wild West’ in his latest New Heights podcast, where he was able to speak to legendary head coach Nick Saban about the current landscape in the world of College Football.

The transfer portal has changed the landscape of the college scene, with colleges battling against each other financially in the race to sign specific players. It has brought into question just how committed players are to actually developing themselves, as opposed to simply chasing the highest-paying opportunity.

Although Kelce is on the side of the players being granted the opportunity to earn from playing at the college level, he has also shared his concerns over the lack of commitment required from the players with the contracts they are signing.

Revenue sharing was introduced last year, which required the colleges to start compensating their student-athletes for their participation in the teams. Although there are certainly some positives to this, it is apparent that the system is far from perfect.

“These kids sign contracts, but they mean nothing. They just leave. They don’t have any penalty for leaving,” Nick Saban said.

“Well, that’s the thing that doesn’t make sense to me. Like, and I know you’ve talked to Congress and they’re trying to get this thing right, but it doesn’t make sense that there’s a commitment from the university, but no commitment in terms of like a contract or any type of time period from the player. Like it’s, you know, it’s the Wild West,” Jason Kelce responded.

“It’s not right what’s going on. And it’s not in the best interest of the player, like you just said, like all for players getting paid. But, I developed so much of, you know, work ethic and all of these other attributes in college because you have to figure it out and you have to grind it. And it’d be interesting going through college nowadays, with how it happens and how quickly guys just up and leave the moment there’s any type of adversity or anything.”

Kelce and Saban clearly have their concerns over the impact the financial games between colleges could have on the players’ characters as they develop towards a career in the NFL. There is an obvious feeling that chasing the money at an early age is not the example that should be set to these players.

The counter argument would be that the players have to take the money whilst it is on offer to them, as the future is not guaranteed. However, it seems as if Kelce and Saban are both calling out for more commitment to be gained for the colleges through the contracts being signed by their athletes.
