This isn’t the first time this season that Tipton has been listed in the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award weekly honors after he won the Player of the Week after his performance in week 2 against Boise State. In that game, Tipton recorded 229 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

On Saturday, he recorded three catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns. He scored a touchdown in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 21-0 lead and scored again in the second half on a flea-flicker before Charles Huff made the decision to pull the starters.

His first touchdown was originally called back for a flag, but after review the flag was picked up and the touchdown stood. Tipton brought in the catch with only one hand before running about 25 yards to the end zone.

On his second touchdown, offensive coordinator Kevin Decker went to his bag of tricks and debuted to first trick play that the offense has run this season. Marcus Stokes handed the ball off to Dallan Hayden, who handed it off to Stonka Burnside, who flipped it back to Stokes before he found a wide open Tipton for a touchdown.

Tipton was one of 13 players listed as honorable mentions this week, and he was one of seven players from the Group of Six to be named as an honorable mention. Baylor’s DJ Lagway was named the Week 5 Player of the Week for the award.

Tipton is up to 367 yards and five touchdowns on 19 receptions, and he leads tight ends across the country in touchdowns. He also leads the nation in average yards per reception, 19.32, among tight ends.

The tight end is eligible of the award as a Texas native, but he has spent a lot of time throughout his career in his home state. He attended Timpson High School in Timpson, Texas before attending Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas during his freshman season.

Tipton helped lead Memphis to its fourth win of the season to improve to 4-1 on the year. The Tigers currently have the second-best odds to win the American Conference behind UTSA, and ESPN’s analytics gives them better than a 50 percent chance to win all of their remaining games.
