West Virginia is looking to make it three in a row in the Big 12 when it travels to face No. 15 Texas Tech on Saturday for a ‘Black Out’ fixture with big implications in the CFP race. The Red Raiders are still very much in contention for a conference championship after going 4-1 (7-1 overall) this season but desperately need to build more credit in the CFP stakes after this week’s playoff rankings were announced.
While a Halloween win over ranked Arizona was a treat for Joey McGuire’s side, it appears the 37-24 defeat at Cincinnati one week prior is still hurting its rep in the polls. Texas Tech is tied with BYU and just one win behind Big 12 leader Utah heading into Week 10, though the clash between those latter two this weekend could balance things out at the head of the conference come Sunday morning.
The fact West Virginia beat Cincinnati 45-42 one week prior to the Bearcats’ win over the Red Raiders adds an extra element of potential surprise to Saturday’s Black Out game. All the more reason for Texas Tech’s fans to do their part in attempting to galvanize the team in what now looks like a do-or-die matchup as far as playoff prospects are concerned.
This game looks geared for Texas Tech running back J’Koby Williams to show out and add to his seven touchdowns, with the junior boasting at least 500 rushing yards more than his nearest roster rival and averaging 7.9 yards per carry as he takes on the No. 137 overall defense in the country. Mountaineers quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. has 16 rushing scores this season – just one behind Army’s overall leader, Cale Hellums – but may struggle to add to that tally against a Texas Tech defense allowing just 94.9 rushing yards per game (13th in NCAA).
