Both Tennessee and Kentucky are fresh off of a bye and ready for a showdown. Kentucky, sitting at 7-1 and No. 6 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, has danced out of trouble time and time again this season. Those late game heroics have the Wildcats firmly in play for the SEC Championship and their first appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Tennessee is 6-2, ranked No. 13 in the first batch of rankings. Based off that alone, you’re inclined to believe that the Volunteers must win out to advance on to the playoff. That begins tonight, with Tennessee having a chance to make a big statement.
Tennessee has historically owned Kentucky, really for the last half century. The Wildcats last won at Neyland back in the weird 2020 season, which was Jeremy Pruitt’s last. Before that, you have to go back to 1984 to find their last win in Knoxville. Josh Heupel is 5-0 so far against Kentucky.
The Volunteers have one resume win to their credit at this point. Tonight would give them another, likely forcing the committee’s hand to shoot them up the board. Remember too, this is just one piece of a massive weekend of college football. We’ll have a much better idea of where things stand come late on Saturday night.
