It’s LSU’s bye week, and that gives you two options for Saturday: get work done or watch a ton of football. If you plan on doing the latter, here’s what I think you should keep your eyes on this weekend.
Thursday
There’s a tripleheader tonight. I’ll list all three games, but I’m only going to talk about two.
6:00 p.m. on ESPNU: SC State at Morgan State
This game is massive for the Celebration Bowl. Morgan State is coming off a surprising loss to Howard in OT last week, while SC State won their MEAC opener over Norfolk State. An SC State win puts the Bulldogs on the path to another trip to Atlanta, but a Morgan State win gives the Bears an advantage.
6:30 p.m. on ESPN: FAU at North Texas
6:30 p.m. on ESPN2: Troy at James Madison
JMU blew their perfect season in Boone last week. Now they host a Troy team who lost a home to a then-winless ULM. Neither team is very happy, and JMU needs this to keep their division title hopes alive.
Friday
There are four games on TV tonight. I have something to say about one of them, and that’s it.
6:00 p.m. on ESPN2: Tulane at Charlotte
6:00 p.m. on ESPNU: Harvard at Dartmouth
6:30 p.m. on ESPN: Baylor at UCF
Dave Aranda got fired, while UCF is coming off a shocking upset of BYU. That’s what comes together in this one.
9:30 p.m. on ESPN2: Kent State at Sacramento State
Saturday morning
Four 11 a.m. kicks and the SECN game highlight this slate. I’m putting five games here since one will be hard to get in a quadbox.
ESPN+: #11/9 North Dakota at #4/4 Youngstown State
Y’all can miss me with the “it’s only FCS” talk because the rest of the morning slate outside of this and one other game is full of duds. This game has FCS playoff implications and should be pretty good.
ESPN: #22 Arizona at #13 Texas Tech
The Red Raiders are coming off an embarrassing loss at Cincinnati, while the Wildcats are quietly looking like a good team. Arizona winning throws the Big 12 into chaos.
Fox: #25 Wisconsin at Iowa
The battle for the Heartland Trophy, one of the lesser B1G trophies, sees two teams that feel like perfect matches face each other. There might not be much scoring, but it should be a tight game.
ESPN2: #19 SMU at Syracuse
It sure is a football game. The fun part here is that Kevin Jennings can keep Syracuse in the game despite being SMU’s QB. He is an agent of chaos and I love it. Also, Syracuse is putting Otto the Orange on their helmets.
11:45 a.m. on SECN: Auburn at #12 Ole Miss
I have no clue what’s going to happen here. The SEC is a crab bucket this year. I expect an easy Ole Miss win, but that means nothing these days.
Saturday afternoon
There’s certainly football in the 2:30 slate.
ABC: World’s Largest…Indoor Cocktail Party? (#17 Florida vs #3 Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium)
This game is being marketed as the Invesco QQQ Atlanta Gridiron Classic. That’s an affront to everything. This could be good, but I have a feeling Georgia’s going to make Florida into mincemeat.
Fox: Arizona State at #8 BYU
This is the “do you wanna see a dead body” game of the week. ASU is bad, and BYU is quite annoyed after last week.
USA: Colorado State at Utah State
Colorado State has one of the worst defenses I have seen in a long time. Remember when they fired their co-defensive coordinator after the first quarter of a game? That hasn’t changed things much. They gave up 42 points to a bad San Diego State offense. This is a chaos game.
2:45 p.m. on ESPN: #6 Utah at Cincinnati
Weird time, yes, but this is a game that matters a bunch. If Cincinnati can do what they did to Texas Tech, it’s worth asking if they can do it to Utah.
Saturday evening
There are some interesting games in this slate to say the least.
6:00 p.m. on ACCN: Clemson at Florida State
It’s not great when the president of your university comes out with a statement where he assures people that they’re aware of the issues with the coaching staff. Florida State actually did that, and somehow their opponent may have a worse head coaching situation. This game may be the first where everyone feels bad coming into it and feels worse coming out of it.
6:30 p.m. on NBC: #2 Ohio State at USC
Lincoln Riley’s tenure is on thin ice, so the best medicine for that is Ohio State. Julian Sayin is out for a while, but Jeremiah Smith is a football wizard and that defense is nuts. Have a fun time out there, Trojans.
6:30 p.m. on ABC: #1 Miami (FL) at North Carolina
This is going to be a bad game, so I’m mostly curious how bad it gets.
7:00 p.m. on BTN: Washington at Nebraska
I love mess. This game is a perfect example of a messy game. Neither team is having a great season, the loser feels so much worse about the future, and the matchup is hard to pinpoint.
Robert Kekaula Memorial Shift
Three games conclude this last Saturday of October.
9:00 p.m. on The CW: Texas State at #20 Boise State
Texas State has a fantastic offense that should challenge Boise State’s defense. The Broncos need to keep winning to keep a stranglehold of the G6 playoff spot.
9:30 p.m. on CBSSN: Northern Illinois at UNLV
NIU might be the worst team in FBS this year. They’re the only remaining winless team in FBS and this game is going to go very poorly for them. That said, if ULM can find a win, there should be a chance for anyone.
10:00 p.m. on USA: Oregon State at Fresno State
Oregon State has two awesome receivers worth watching. If you can stay up late, do it.
Tuesday
Midweek MACtion is back!
6:00 p.m. on ESPN2: Ohio at Akron
7:00 p.m. on ESPN: Buffalo at Miami (OH)
Wednesday
6:00 p.m. on ESPNU: Ball State at UMass
6:00 p.m. on CBSSN: Toledo at Sacramento State
6:30 p.m. on ESPN2: Central Michigan vs* Eastern Michigan (Ford Field)
