MIAMI, Fla. – It was a bye week and the Miami Hurricanes (5-0 overall; ACC 3-0) still managed to win without playing a single snap before returning to the field at Hard Rock Stadium this upcoming Saturday for an in-state rivalry clash against the Florida State Seminoles on prime time.
Several other outcomes, including upsets, occurred that will impact college football.
AP Rankings
The Hurricanes were No. 4 in the Associated Press’ previous Top 25 poll.
No. 1 Texas arguably suffered the weekend's biggest upset, falling 27-24 to Oklahoma, who lost to Michigan earlier in the season. Longhorns senior quarterback Arch Manning completed 19 of 31 passes (61.3 percent) and threw for 260 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, including a pick-six in the fourth quarter. Sooner senior safety Peyton Bowen returned the turnover for 42 yards.
Meanwhile, No. 2 Georgia beat No. 6 Alabama 20-17 and No. 3 Notre Dame dominated Stanford 58-7. The Bulldogs, Fighting Irish, and Hurricanes are likely to get bumped up in the next AP poll as the Longhorns dip.
ACC Landscape
The rest of the Atlantic Coast Conference competition wasn’t convincing, other than Louisville’s 44-20 win over the Seminoles on Friday. Cardinals junior running back Isaac Brown rushed for 242 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns: 97 yards in the second quarter and 68 yards in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Duke and Pitt, the only other ACC undefeated teams before Saturday, both lost their respective matchups. The Blue Devils fell 28-25 to Georgia Tech and the No. 25 Panthers finished 21-17 to UNC. It was Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick’s first win over a ranked opponent.
The Hurricanes are projected to win the remaining portion of ACC play on the regular season schedule and book a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, to claim the league for the first time in history.
Owners of the Sunshine State
The other Power Four Florida-based programs each lost this weekend.
After starting the season 4-0, the Florida Gators lost 38-19 to the South Carolina Gamecocks. Junior star running back Jadan Baugh was held to 70 rushing yards on 15 carries, but scored a touchdown. The Gamecocks’ defense sacked Gators junior quarterback Aaron Philo three times, plus senior cornerback Vicari Swain and senior linebacker Justin Okoronkwo each grabbed an interception.
The UCF Knights fell 42-28 to No. 18 Oklahoma State and Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell’s hot seat has experienced a rise in temperature. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes are hopeful to have returning players from injuries, like junior cornerback Xavier Lucas (undisclosed).
Kickoff against Florida State is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. E.T. and will be televised on ESPN.
