Kansas State Wildcats coach Collin Klein is pretty familiar with the quarterback his team is facing this weekend at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan.
The Wildcats are up against the Houston Cougars, whose offense is led by quarterback Conner Weigman. The name is familiar to Klein because Weigman played for the Texas A& M Aggies. That's where Klein was the offensive coordinator before he returned to lead his alma mater last December.
Klein said he's monitored Weigman's progress since he left the Aggies in the transfer portal.
"Yeah, I've been so proud of him and so happy for his success," Klein said during his weekly press conference. "You look at how he's competing and leading that football team, it's very, very impressive."
Weigman has already been impressive this season. He has thrown for 1,186 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing nearly 68 percent of his passes. It has led to a 4-1 start for the Cougars. Last week he was the key in helping the Cougars to a solid victory against the UCF Knights. The rally featured 27 straight points by the Cougars in the 27-17 win.
The Wildcats will have to find a way to stop Weigman if they are to bounce back from a 31-26 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats two weeks ago. It was their first loss of the season, dropping them to 3-1 after a solid start in the non-conference portion of the schedule.
HOUSTON WITHOUT KEY DEFENDER FOR SATURDAY
The Cougars will be without one of their top defenders for Saturday's game against the Wildcats.
Linebacker Jaden Yates is listed as out on the injury report for the second Big 12 game of the season for the Wildcats. He is dealing with a leg injury that occurred in the victory against the UCF Knights last week.
For the Wildcats, tight end Will Anciaux is out for the season after sustaining a lower leg injury in the loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Big 12 opener at Nippert Stadium. Backup quarterback Blake Barnett is also out while quarterback Dillon Duff is listed as questionable. If Duff is unable to go, the Wildcats will only have starter Avery Johnson available at quarterback.
KLEIN EXTENDS OFFER TO SUPER YOUNG PROSPECT
Klein is once again getting an early start on a recruit.
The Wildcats are likely just getting in on the ground floor because Gigger is expected to develop into one of the nation's top prospects. He has played on the varsity team since he was 14.
