After an emotional win over Michigan, the Gophers need to quickly shift their focus to a tricky road trip against Purdue. The Boilermakers have started 2-3 this season, but they’re coming off a road win at Illinois, their first Big Ten victory since 2023. Minnesota needs to be ready for an old-school Big Ten West showdown.
From the practice field: what we’re hearing
Purdue and Minnesota are both carrying a ton of momentum into Saturday’s showdown in West Lafayette, but for two very different reasons. The Boilermakers earned their first conference win in more than 1,000 days, and the Gophers won the Little Brown Jug at home for the first time since 1977.
“Offensively, it starts with Drake Lindsey, their quarterback. I think he’s one of the top quarterbacks in college football,” Purdue head coach Barry Odom said.
“He’s got a number of playmakers around him. And then their offensive line, the way that they’re playing the last couple weeks, they’re big, playing well together, they’re physical. So we’ve got certainly a big challenge defensively to have a chance there in game planning against them and then going and executing the game plan.”
The matchup-specific stat that matters
Purdue’s offense has been solid this season, averaging 405.8 yards per game, which ranks 61st in the country. It will be the best offense Minnesota has faced since Week 2 against Mississippi State. The Gophers’ defense has looked like it has taken a big step over the last two weeks, but that came against Washington’s 85th-ranked offense and Michigan’s 122nd-ranked offense (yards per game).
The Boilermakers are far from the best offense that Minnesota will face this season, but we’ll find out very quickly if the defensive improvements are legit or a product of playing struggling offenses over the last two weeks.
Injury/availability report
The Gophers’ offensive line was severely banged up for last week’s game against Michigan. Starting center Ashton Beers and backup center Brett Carroll are out for the season, but potential first-round pick Greg Johnson has filled that role nicely. Jaden Ball was out last week due to injury, and he was replaced by left guard Brett Warren, who made his first career start at the position.
Minnesota is relatively healthy across the rest of its roster, but it will be worth monitoring the status of Ball and any other new injuries on Wednesday’s availability report from the Big Ten.
Head-to-head history and recent trends
Minnesota and Purdue played every season from 2014 to 2023, which coincided with the entire history of the Big Ten West division. The Gophers went 7-3 in those 10 matchups, and they lead the all-time series 42-35-3. 2013 and 2024 are the only two years that they haven’t played in the regular season since 1978.
Ross-Ade Stadium isn’t known as one of the toughest places to play in the Big Ten, but people who follow the conference know it can catch any team off guard. Minnesota is 3-4 in its last seven trips to West Lafayette. P.J. Fleck needs to have his team prepared for a 60-minute fight against a formidable opponent.
X-factor: Starting fast
The Gophers have historically struggled to find offensive success early in games under offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh Jr. That has changed over the last two weeks with two first-quarter touchdown drives against Washington and a seven-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to open the game against Michigan.
Anyone who follows college football closely knows this is the textbook definition of a letdown spot for the Gophers. Fresh off an emotional win, they have a road trip against a Purdue team that has finished last in the Big Ten in back-to-back seasons. It feels like the first quarter will set the tone for Saturday night’s game.
Coaching tendencies
After an underwhelming four seasons as the head coach of Missouri from 2016 to 2019, Odom built an offensive juggernaut at UNLV. The Rebels ranked 22nd and 15th in points per game in his two seasons in Las Vegas. Despite having a defensive background, Odom’s teams have always scored, dating back to some top-20 scoring offenses at Mizzou with Drew Lock at quarterback.
Quarterback Ryan Browne might not have the high-end potential of the signal-callers of some of Odom’s previous offenses, but Purdue is finding its stride under offensive coordinator Josh Henson. Purdue has averaged 30.0 points per game at home this season, and the Gophers’ defensive coordinator, Danny Collins, needs to be prepared for a dangerous offense.
Minnesota connections
Former Gophers running back Fame Ijeboi has broken out this year after transferring to Purdue in the offseason. He has 86 carries for 354 yards, which ranks sixth in the Big Ten, and six touchdowns. Minnesota focused on retaining Darius Taylor over the development of Ijeboi following a promising 2025 season. We’ll see if there’s any revenge factor on Saturday night.
“He’s doing a great job, which is no surprise. I mean, he did a great job when he was with us. I am so happy for him,” Fleck said. “In this new world of college athletics, I think everybody is looking for different opportunities, and I am so happy for him. He found that opportunity to be the No. 1 back there. I am so happy for him. He did so much for our program, and he’s such a great person, and he’s playing at a really high level.”
Ijeboi isn’t the only member of last year’s Gophers team now with Purdue. Current defensive coordinator Kevin Kane was on the Gophers’ staff as the outside linebackers/nickel coach.
Weather forecast
It’s currently looking like it will be a beautiful fall Saturday in West Lafayette. The forecast is calling for a high of 80 degrees and a low of 60. There could be some cloud cover by the time the game starts at 7 p.m. CT, and there’s a slight chance of rain as the night rolls on.
