Former Tennessee football star Jason Witten has become the interim offensive coordinator for Oklahoma and will move into a play-calling role, according to the Oklahoman.
Witten's promotion occurred after the Sooners fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle on Nov. 2.
Witten joined Oklahoma's coaching staff following the end of the 2025 season as tight ends coach.
Oklahoma (4-4, 2-3 SEC) has the second-worst scoring offense in the SEC, averaging just 22 points per game. Witten will make his play-calling debut against Florida on Nov. 7. The Sooners do not play Tennessee this season.
Senior tight end Rocky Beers is the team's second-leading receiver with 446 yards and leads the Sooners with four receiving touchdowns.
Before Oklahoma, Witten was a high school football coach at Liberty Christian in Texas. The third-round NFL draft pick spent 16 of 17 years with the Dallas Cowboys, earning 11 Pro-Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro nods.
Witten played for the Vols from 2000-02. He left for the NFL after his junior year and accumulated 797 career receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 68 catches. He played high school football in Tennessee at Elizabethton.
