After the Florida Gators upset Texas on Oct. 17, head coach Jon Sumrall had two weeks to prepare to play No. 3 Georgia on Halloween.
The biggest question for the Gators during the bye was who would be the starting quarterback against the rival Bulldogs.
It won't be the quarterback that helped engineer a 27-24 win over the Longhorns.
Per ESPN's Pete Thamel, the Gators are turning to Aaron Philo after he and Tramell Jones Jr. split reps with the first-team unit in practice this week.
Jones made his first start of the season against Texas while Philo was sidelined with a shoulder issue. Jones went 22 of 35 passing for two touchdowns. He added another 41 yards on the ground.
Philo earned the starting job in training camp. He's thrown for 1,341 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. He had an impressive performance in UF's 52-28 win over Missouri on Sept. 26, throwing for 196 yards and one touchdown while adding another score on the ground.
However, Philo did not play well during the Gators’ back-to-back losses against Mizzou and South Carolina. He threw for 197 yards and one touchdown in Florida's 45-17 loss to Missouri. Against South Carolina, he went 21 of 28 passing for 227 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in Florida's 38-19 loss.
Sumrall and the staff are going with their first choice out of training camp instead of going with the hand that saved their season against Texas. UF remains in the College Football Playoff conversation thanks to the win over Texas.
How Florida plays against Georgia will play a huge role in the CFP. The Gators believe Philo gives them their best chance to win on Saturday.
It'll be interesting to see how much grace Sumrall and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner will give Philo on Saturday. Jones could be called upon to provide a spark if the offense starts slow.
Can Florida pull another upset?
The Gators have not beaten Georgia since 2020 and have lost eight of their last nine games against the rival Bulldogs. UF has been hot and cold this season. Coming off the bye, the Gators should have a good game plan ready to go.
Georgia is coming off a 27-24 loss to Auburn in its last game on Oct. 17. Auburn was able to find the blueprint to beat the Bulldogs. The Tigers won via the rushing game, a strong suit for Florida.
