Florida football will start sophomore quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. against No. 7 Texas on Saturday, giving the former four-star recruit his first career start as Aaron Philo continues working through a shoulder injury.
Jones took most of the first-team reps during the week and enters the matchup having completed 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in five appearances. Florida still has not ruled out Philo, whose availability will depend on how he responds during pregame warm-ups in Austin.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the decision Saturday on X, formerly Twitter, adding that Philo could still be available in an emergency role despite Jones getting the start.

Philo injured his shoulder late in Florida’s 38-19 loss to South Carolina last week and remained limited during practice. The Georgia Tech transfer has started all six games this season, completing 105 of 149 passes for 1,341 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.
Jones now steps into a hostile road assignment against a Longhorns team that enters 4-1, with its lone loss coming against the unranked Oklahoma Sooners. Florida is 4-2 after opening the season 4-0 before consecutive SEC losses to Missouri and South Carolina. The assignment gives the 19-year-old signal-caller an immediate test vs. elite competition.
Head coach Jon Sumrall expressed confidence in Jones earlier this week, saying the sophomore can win games as a starter in Saturday’s pivotal SEC road matchup in Austin. Star receiver Vernell Brown III also remains a game-time decision because of a knee injury.
Kickoff is set for noon ET at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on ABC. Jones will start, while Philo’s potential role remains unresolved pending warm-ups.
