As the old adage goes; there are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happen.

That much is true on the recruiting trail, where we have weeks of silence before a hectic early signing period sees the culmination of massive recruiting efforts come to fruition over the course of 48 hours.

While we're still a ways out from the early signing period of Dec. 2-4, that doesn't we shouldn't prepare for what's to come. Last year we saw cinematic delays at the buzzer, last-minute flips, and schools scrambling to keep their class intact after dismissing their head coach.

Commitments seem much firmer this cycle, but there are still a lot of storylines USA TODAY's Florida Network has been monitoring all year and will keep an eye on as December approaches.

Here are 50 things to know 50 days out of signing day.

Who are the top 10 players on USA TODAY Florida top 100?

A'mir Sears: Columbus' two-way star reclassified to the 2027 class weeks before the start of the regular season and cemented his status as a five-star recruit with a performance for the ages against Bishop Gorman on national TV. Sears is committed to Miami.

Nick Lennear: The 5-foot-11½, 165-pound Carol City wide receiver is another five-star commit staying home to play for the Hurricanes. Lennear has made several highlight reel catches this season and has an elite ability to make plays after the catch.

Mark Matthews: At 6-5½ and 300 pounds, Matthews is a mammoth but agile lineman who projects as an elite tackle at the next level. The St. Thomas Aquinas standout was the first of several Florida players to commit to Texas A&M.

Jamarin Simmons: The Clemson commit is the total package at wide receiver. The 5-11, 165-pound Godby star is an outstanding route runner, makes impressive catches look easy, and has the speed to separate downfield.

Godby Cougars wide receiver Jamarin Simmons (1) sprints towards the end zone. The Godby Cougars and the Pensacola Catholic Crusaders met on the turf at Gene Cox Stadium for a Thursday night football game, Sept. 3, 2026.

Zyron Forstall: The 6-3½, 225-pound edge rusher is a committed to Texas A&M. Forstall was ranked No. 5 on the midseason top 100, but left IMG Academy shortly after the list was released.

Eric McFarland: McFarland is another elite recruit who reclassified to the 2027 class and is committed to Texas A&M. The 5-8, 177-pound receiver can line up all over the field and puts a lot of pressure on defenses with his speed and playmaking ability.

Kaden Henderson: Henderson (6-2, 218 pounds) is a dynamic, explosive linebacker that named Texas A&M over Notre Dame and LSU and has spent the entire year inside the Top 10 of the USA TODAY Florida Top 100.

Aaryn Washington:Washington (6-foot, 150 pounds) continues to play at a high-level after transferring from Mater Dei (Calif.). The USC commit is a polished, physical corner that has limited big plays from his assignments all year for the Ascenders, which is battling for the No. 1 spot in most major national rankings.

Fred Ards III:Ards is a talented and projectable as any prospect in the country. The Texas A&M commit has been the crown jewel for Jones defensive line littered with Division I commits with a deep bag behind the line of scrimmage, great timing at the line, and a frame that gives offensive lines real issues.

Wyatt Smith: The Ohio State commit has been invaluable for St. Thomas Aquinas, which is a consensus top-team nationally solely on the back of the defense. Smith (6-6, 235 pounds) is a devastating defensive end with an impressive tool kit as a pass rusher and the physical tools to dominate for the Buckeyes.

What are the recent recruiting headlines in Florida?

Florida flips 5-star WR Easton Royal: Despite back-to-back losses that came as frustrating to the Gator faithful, Florida still flipped Royal away from his commitment to his Texas. Royal is the second composite 5-star to name Florida, joining Coatesville (Pa.) OL Max Hiller.

Miami increasing pressure on star FSU commit: Carol City's Za'Kari Johnson told 247Sports that he would "love to be a 'Cane" after a visit to Miami last month. He told USA TODAY over the summer that the staff in Tallahassee was a big part of his decision to commit, and reportedly said the door is still open for his recruitment. Miami has been recruiting Johnson for a long time, and isn't giving up as things get messier at Florida State.

Elite recruits just aren't playing: Outside of the multiple Top 100 commits that outright enrolled early this year, we've seen several Top 100 players at IMG transfer out, multiple stars at Carol City get suspended, and a slew of season-ending injuries to Top 100 players like Vero Beach QB Champ Monds, St. Thomas Aquinas WR Julius Jones Jr., Lakeland DE Drew Sapp and Godby WR Jamarin Simmons. Simply put, the players we expected to be on the field this spring have had their seasons cut short for many different reasons at an alarming rate this year.

Expected visitors list for Florida State at Miami is loaded: It is a safe bet that every notable recruit in the state of Florida will find their way to Hard Rock Stadium this weekend. The biggest we know of include 2028 phenoms like Mandarin WR Brysen Wright, Bolles elite trio of RB Xander Edwards, TE J.C. Wessel, and EDGE Asher Ghioto, along with Chaminade-Madonna ATH Peter Pierre.

Who are the top uncommitted players in Florida?

Tranard Roberts: Roberts (6-foot, 195 pounds) is a powerful running back with elite speed. He's up to 569 yards and 11 touchdowns on 72 carries after missing most of his junior season with injury.

Deion Jackson: Jackson (6-2, 215 pounds) has been invaluable for Vero Beach. The versatile linebacker is up to 29 tackles and a pick for the Indians.

Vero Beach’s Deion Jackson is on TCPalm's 2026 Super 11 list of top senior recruits across the Treasure Coast.

Liufau Loumoli: Part of a star-studded linebacker core at IMG, Loumoli (6-1, 210 pounds) has recorded 12 tackles, and 2.0 sacks for an IMG team that has sleepwalked past most of their opponents in the first half.

Zion Vilma: An impressive track athlete, Vilma (6-1, 180 pounds) has shined on both sides for Dr. Joaquin Garci, catching 15 passes for a team-best 214 yards and two touchdowns on offense.

Connail Jackson: Jackson (5-10, 188 pounds) is approaching back-to-back seasons with 2,00 rushing yards. He's up to 1,441 yards and 20 touchdowns on 102 carries for Cardinal Mooney.

Daveon Belhomme: Belhomme (6-foot, 175 pounds) has rapidly ascended up recruiting boards this fall after tallying 40 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, three interceptions, six pass breakups and a forced fumble, while reeling in 16 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown at Clearwater Central Catholic.

Nino Joseph: Joseph (5-7, 170 pounds) has been a workhorse for Miami Central and has impressed while doing it. The running back has carried the rock 101 times for the Rockets, tallying 910 yards and eight touchdowns.

What are the biggest recruiting questions for Florida's colleges?

Will Florida's early season success translate to recruiting? The first month of the season couldn't have gone any better for the Gators, headlined by a dominant 52-28 win over Ole Miss in Gainesville. That game was well attended by several high ranked recruits, including Jones edge rusher Fred Ards III. Will the new coaching staff be able to parlay those positive vibes into a flip or two down the stretch?

Will the cloud of uncertainty around Florida State's coaching staff hurt the Seminoles? It's the biggest question in Florida, and it will be (again) until the administration makes a decision one way or another. It's been speculated that Mike Norvell will be safe and still be Florida State's head coach through the 2027 season, but will recruits sign up knowing the coaching staff isn't on the firmest footing?

Will Florida State get any offensive linemen? The Seminoles do not have commitments from any offensive linemen in the 2027 class. Other than quarterback, it's arguably the biggest position separating FSU from Miami. The Hurricanes offensive line is homegrown talent, while the Seminoles will have to go through the transfer portal.

Can Miami cash in on Florida State's disfunction? Za'Kari Johnson is a snapshot of Florida State's position in the recruiting ecosystem. Johnson is committed to Florida State, but is openly impressed by Miami and is expected to flip in the coming weeks. The 'Noles are poised to lose of their best players this cycle to Miami, and the gap between the two programs grows in the 2028 and 2029 classes. Miami's recruiting pitch against what was once one of its biggest rivals on the trail continues to get easier and easier.

Can we expect more from Florida Atlantic? The Owls have struggled mightily in recent years, but sit at 4-1 on the year ahead of the tougher part of their schedule. FAU some solid commitments in this class like Hawthorne WR Dominick Harvey, but the class isn't reflective of a Division I football team in Florida. Does Zach Kittley have the administrative support to cash in on a strong start to the year?

Will a skid at USF hurt the Bulls on the trail? After managing a 4-0 start to the year, Brian Hartline's Bulls dropped back-to-back games against Temple and UTSA one week after escaping Bowling Green with a 14-6 win. USF holds some impressive commitments from players like Evans athlete Brian Dillard and Merritt Island QB Kevin Verpaele, and keeping them away from other suitors might be tougher if the first year head coach can't stop the bleeding against teams like Kent State, UAB or FAU.

Lake Wales wide receiver Kaneilius Purdy breaks a tackle as Auburndale's Crystian Stevenson grabs for his jersey on Thursday night at Legion Field.

Can UCF hold on to Kaneilius Purdy? Objectively, UCF is punching above their weight with Purdy. The Lake Wales ATH has been incredible to start the year and is far-and-away the best recruit in the Knights' class this year. Elite SEC and ACC schools will enter the picture soon, and the Knights will have to show just how much they want Purdy in this class come Signing Day.

How can FIU defend its class? Willie Simmons has landed some impressive commitments from players like Venice RB Dorien Jones and Spanish River WR Jayden Elder. The Golden Panthers two losses have been to their competitors on the recruiting trail, USF and FAU. This staff has kept their classes together well before, but the product on the field has to match the quality of recruits if FIU wants to continue its positive trajectory in the state.

What out-of-state schools are doing the best job recruiting Florida?

Texas A&M: A big reason why the Aggies have the top-ranked class is because of their success in Florida. Not including Zyron Forstall, Texas A&M still has commitments from four of the top nine players in Florida. That's elite.

Notre Dame: It's hard to argue with what the Irish have done this cycle. Getting commitments from Vero Beach quarterback Champ Monds, the St. Thomas Aquinas duo of wide receiver Julius Jones and safety Zayden Gamble, IMG edge rusher Jackson Vaughn and Chaminade-Madonna safety John Gay is impressive.

Georgia Tech: The Yellowjackets defense is getting a big talent infusion from the Sunshine State. This list includes West Boca defensive tackle Jamar Thompson, IMG safety Larry Moon, Palmetto defensive tackle Maleek Lee, Trinity Christian defensive tackle Adrian Williams and Niceville linebacker Noah Renes.

Clemson: The Tigers always seem to come into Florida and get a couple of the state's most talented players. This year is no different. Clemson has commitments from Godby wide receiver Jamarin Simmons, Lakeland defensive lineman Santana Harvey and Atlantic Coast edge rusher Desmond Malpress.

Ohio State: The Buckeyes traditionally have done a great job recruiting South Florida and are doing it again in the 2027 class. Ohio State has commitments from two of St. Thomas Aquinas best — edge rusher Wyatt Smith and cornerback Jaden Caren — and Chaminade-Madonna safety Angelo Smith, the younger brother of Ohio State star receiver Jeremiah Smith.

Nebraska: The Huskers have commitments from Western cornerback Bryce Williams and Armwood defensive tackle Errol Demontagnac. Nebraska also has a commitment from Jailen Hill, a three-star cornerback who started the 2026 season at Carol City before being declared ineligible.

Virginia Tech: James Franklin did a good job recruiting Florida when he was at Penn State and is repeating that success with the Hokies. He has commitments from IMG linebacker Amarri Irvin and Palm Beach Lakes athlete Turmarian Moreland.

Maryland: The Terrapins had a strong summer in Florida. Maryland landed commitments from Columbia wide receiver Kyren Caldwell, IMG safety Charles Roberts and Evans quarterback William Jackson.

Syracuse: Head coach Fran Brown has made Florida a priority since he arrived in Syracuse. This year, the Orange have commitments from Osceola defensive lineman Jason Lewis, Jones edge rusher Braylon Otis, First Coast offensive tackle Marcus Small, American Heritage offensive lineman Nico Ramos and Archbishop McCarthy defensive lineman Edan Richardson.

Kentucky: The Wildcats haul from South Florida includes American Heritage tight end Trae Proctor, Santaluces running back Kelsey Gerald and St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Austin Coles.

What college coaches are on the hot seat and how will it impact Florida recruiting?

Mike Norvell (Florida State): Other coaches may be on hotter seats (technically), but none matters more to recruits to the state in Florida. Norvell has been on a perpetual hot seat for approximately a year and there doesn't seem to be any end in sight. Further complicating things are Norvell's hefty buyout and Florida State's lack of an athletic director.

Florida State University football head coach Mike Norvell.

Mike Locksley (Maryland): The Terrapins have a total of two Big Ten wins since the start of the 2024 season. That's just one of the reasons why some Maryland fans are eager for a fresh start. Locksley does have a trio of Florida commitments, including two in the top 60.

Greg Schiano (Rutgers): Schiano is Rutgers all-time winningest coach, but that season opening loss to UMass didn't curry any favor. The Scarlet Knights have made Florida a priority under Schiano. They currently have three commits from the Sunshine State, led by Northside Christian safety Zion Watson.

Shane Beamer (South Carolina): It's hard to get a good feel for South Carolina. They have legitimate NFL talent, but the team is maddeningly inconsistent. The Gamecocks lost against Kentucky after leading by 17, then dominate Florida in Gainesville. South Carolina has one Florida commit, but it's a powerful one: West Nassau offensive tackle Clayton Lee.

Lincoln Riley (USC): USC just hasn't taken the step forward that it thought it would when it snagged Riley away from Oklahoma following the 2021 season. The defense continues to be a major issue for the Trojans. USC's lone Florida commit in this class is four-star IMG cornerback Aaryn Washington.

Luke Fickell (Wisconsin): A win at ranked Penn State has helped the Badgers regain form, but is it enough? Wisconsin looks the part of a competitive Big Ten team and the flames around Fickell's seat are much cooler in October than they were in August. Still, the Badgers are coming off a bye week with three-straight ranked opponents and can't sleepwalk through their schedule after that. A strong finish should keep Lennard safety Mekhi Williams tethered to the class.

What are the names to watch ahead of signing day?

Fred Ards III: Ards was at the Swamp for the win over Ole Miss and had good things to say. The Gators were a finalist for the edge rusher before he named Texas A&M.

Mark Matthews: Matthews is a major pledge for Texas A&M, but other schools have not given up. Keep an eye on Miami and LSU, which he says are still pushing.

Za'kari Johnson: The Carol City athlete has long-been connected to Miami, and has been vocal about his desire to play for the 'Canes while being commited to Florida State. He's expected to be at the game on Saturday, which will weigh volumes on his recruitment.

Mekhi Williams: Williams is one of the most sought-after defensive backs in the state, and he avoided the uncertainty in Tallahassee by flipping to Wisconsin — where embattled head coach Luke Fickell awaits. Should the Badgers move on before signing day, Williams will be at the top of the board for a lot of programs.

Tyreon Howard: The largely unknown edge rusher out of Boca Ceiga has earned offers from Missouri and Miami in recent weeks while visiting FSU. Howard (6-4, 230 pounds) is set to visit both programs.
