One of the great college football rivalry games gets underway at the Cotton Bowl as Texas and Oklahoma renew their hostilities in a consequential Week 6 clash in the SEC. As ever, there is plenty on the line for both teams.

On the Texas side, its No. 1 ranking hangs in the balance, along with its undefeated record. Conversely, Oklahoma is simply desperate to avoid falling under .500 and effectively end its season right here.

Here are the major factors that will determine what happens at the Texas State Fair, along with The Big Lead’s final prediction for the game.

Texas Has the Better Team — But This Is a Rivalry

Cutting Through the Hype: Who Actually Wins Texas vs. Oklahoma

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer (10) rushes as Texas Longhorns defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau (3) and Texas Longhorns defensive back Michael Taaffe (16) defend in the first half of the Red River Rivalry college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorn at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025.

No. 1 Texas enters the Red River Rivalry at 4-0 with victories over Ohio State and Tennessee, while Oklahoma is an ugly 2-2 after consecutive losses to Michigan and Georgia where it scored 23 combined points.

The contrast is stark, but history suggests caution: Texas was also the team in trouble a year ago and still managed to beat a previously unbeaten Oklahoma squad. The Longhorns have won the last two meetings, including a 23-6 victory last season.

Texas also has the advantage of coming off a bye, giving Steve Sarkisian’s team additional preparation and a chance to get healthier. That’s particularly relevant with running back Hollywood Smothers and nickel Xavier Filsaime now off the injury report.

The Deciding Matchup: Texas’ Defense vs. Oklahoma’s Offense

This is where the game could tilt heavily toward Texas. The Longhorn defense held Tennessee to just 221 total yards while recording 10 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Texas has repeatedly shown an ability to wreck opposing offenses with its front, and could have a decisive edge against a wobbly Sooner protection detail.

Oklahoma’s offense, meanwhile, has become its biggest problem. The Sooners turned the ball over four times in the 41-13 loss to Georgia, including a devastating John Mateer fumble returned for a touchdown. Their offensive-line situation isn’t ideal either: tackle Michael Fasusi was initially listed as doubtful, while guard Eddy Pierre-Louis was named questionable.

That combination is dangerous against Texas. If the Longhorns generate pressure without blitzing heavily, Mateer could spend much of the afternoon trying to survive rather than attack.

Oklahoma still has a top-five national defense and its front has the talent to make Texas work for every yard.

The key is Texas’ rushing attack. The Longhorns rank only 88th nationally on the ground, and Sarkisian has emphasized that establishing the run is essential against OU. Historically, the team that wins the rushing battle has won 18 of the last 20 meetings, while Texas has controlled the ground game in its recent victories.

Arch Manning doesn’t necessarily need a spectacular statistical day. He needs to avoid turnovers, make the easy throws, and capitalize when Oklahoma inevitably brings pressure. Texas’ healthier backfield should help.

Texas vs. Oklahoma Prediction: Who Wins?

DraftKings Line: Texas -7.5 | Total: 39.5

The rivalry should keep this competitive early, but Texas’ defense can create too many problems for Oklahoma’s meager attack. The Longhorns have the superior quarterback situation, more offensive consistency and, most importantly, its own potent defensive front to exploit Oklahoma’s lingering weaknesses.

The Big Lead picks…

  • Texas wins 27-13
  • Covers the spread
  • And hits the over

Pick: Texas -7.5. Oklahoma’s defensive front should keep the Sooners within striking distance for a while, but Texas eventually pulls away with field position, its own defensive pressure, and a far more reliable offense.
