We here at the College Football Sunday Summary are pretty smart when it comes to college football. Just ask us. We are rarely shy about telling you how wise we are. Let’s take a look at some of what happened in Week 6, and clearly our brightness will shine, as we knew it all along.

College Football Sunday Summary

Who Didn’t See This Coming?

Oklahoma went into the Red River Rivalry with a terrible offense. The Sooners were in the bottom 10 in the country in total offense. Coordinator Ben Arbuckle was under heat. And transfer quarterback John Mateer was nowhere near the John Mateer the coaching staff expected when they got John Mateer out of the portal.

So “of course” we saw the Sooners upsetting top-ranked Texas in the Red River Rivalry game in Dallas. In all seriousness, Texas was one of the weakest #1-ranked teams in a while. What do they say in Texas? Too much hat, not enough cattle. Buying into the hype without just cause never makes you know more.

In that same light, of course we saw UCLA going to Eugene and beating Oregon. Sure, UCLA had not won at Autzen Stadium in more than 20 years. Oregon was going to be missing starting quarterback starting quarterback Dante Moore. But backup quarterback Dylan Raiola had been very good the previous week against USC.

So who would not have picked the Bruins to beat the Oregon team we had picked to be in the national championship game? Naturally, we knew that a veteran Oregon offense who have seven turnovers.

Of Course…

Of course we knew that UCLA’s Bob Chesney and Kentucky’s Will Stein would be the early frontrunners for national coach of the year honors. They took over programs that had losing records last year and rosters full of players that barely drew any attention in the transfer portal. Naturally, UCLA would be 5-0, and Kentucky would be 5-1. They are the only two schools in the National Football Foundation Super 16 rankings with new coaches this year. The over-the-top success was so predictable.

A Knight in Shining Blue and Gold…

While we set aside our self-aggrandization for a very brief moment, we must put in a moment of seriousness. If you have not seen UCLA running back Wayne Knight, take the time to do it.

Not the Seinfeld actor…

The UCLA running back…although at 5’-8” and 5’-7” respectively they are nearly the same height. But Knight, the football player, is currently in the top five in the country in rushing touchdowns and scoring. The transfer who came with Chesney from James Madison is the focal point of UCLA’s rebuilt offense. Take a minute to watch him next week so you will know what we know.

And You Mocked…

Some of you laughed when Tulsa beat Oklahoma State in the season opener. But we knew the Cowboys would be in the race for the Big 12 championship after Week 6. Sure, we did. Another new coach in Eric Morris. A new quarterback, Drew Mestemaker, who had been at the Group of 6 level the previous year. Wasn’t this a given that they would now be in a four-way for second in the conference at 2-0 in Big 12 play and 4-1 overall?

Speaking of Conference Standings…

Of course, we knew Wake Forest would be in second place in the ACC after Week 6. Any chump could pick Miami to win the conference. So what? No skill needed to do that. And just because the media spent its time at conference media days in July picking Wake Forest to finish 13th out of 17 teams. You’re surprised that the Demon Deacons are 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play? We’re not! That is, if you overlook that our vote at ACC Media Days was for them to finish eighth in the conference.

Highly Skilled…

The folks at the Sunday Summary are so attuned to everything college football that we, of course, knew that Kentucky would win back-to-back games by the exact same score (35-34) in overtime. Come on…we knew that was going to happen all along. Are you saying you didn’t?

We See You…

As a byproduct of out-of-conference schedules, and maybe some skilled teams thrown into the mix, there is only one SEC team with a losing overall record (out of 16 schools). Come on, even you knew that was going to be Arkansas. You knew it all along.

Sartorial Splendor…

We usually try to save the section for some one-off uniforms that catch our attention. Often they are a tribute to something or someone in their history. We wouldn’t exactly call this one a tribute. But it was fun. Western Kentucky not only had the Hilltopper mascot logo of Big Red on the helmets, but they were customized by position.

Look, no one knows what Big Red specifically is. He is listed as an undefined species. A Hilltopper is someone who resides on top of a hill in the western region of Kentucky, so it is really hard to be more specific. The campus sits on top of a hill. How much more did you need to know?

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers defeated the Missouri State Bears 34-13 on Thursday night. They wore all-black uniforms with the special helmets. The photos are courtesy of the WKU Athletic Department.
