College football's latest rankings delivered another reminder that preseason expectations mean very little once the games begin.
Georgia has climbed to No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 following its 20-17 victory over Alabama, while Oregon has completely disappeared from the rankings. The Bulldogs received 66 of 70 first-place votes, establishing themselves as the clear favorite among poll voters.
Notre Dame moved to No. 2, followed by Miami, Ohio State and Indiana.
The changes created a dramatically different national picture heading into Week 7. Several teams that entered the season with championship expectations are now facing increasingly difficult paths to the College Football Playoff.
Georgia takes control of the rankings
The Bulldogs delivered one of the biggest victories of the weekend by defeating Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Georgia's 20-17 win demonstrated its ability to win a difficult road game against another national championship contender. The result pushed Kirby Smart's team to the top of the rankings.

Notre Dame also benefited from an impressive weekend. The Fighting Irish defeated Stanford 58-7 and climbed to second.
Miami moved into third, while Ohio State and Indiana completed the top five. Alabama remained highly regarded despite its defeat, checking in at No. 6. Texas dropped to seventh following its loss to Oklahoma. BYU, Utah and another group of contenders remain involved in an increasingly competitive playoff discussion.
Oregon suffers stunning rankings collapse
Perhaps the most surprising development involved Oregon. The Ducks entered the season ranked second nationally but fell completely out of the AP Top 25 following a 17-15 defeat against UCLA. The result represented a significant setback for a program expected to compete near the top of the Big Ten.
UCLA, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the season's biggest surprises. Kentucky also made an impressive move, climbing to No. 15 following its victory over LSU. Wake Forest and Northwestern entered the rankings, adding more unexpected names to the national conversation.

Week 7 presents enormous matchups
The next weekend could produce even more movement. No. 4 Ohio State visits No. 5 Indiana in a matchup with major Big Ten and playoff implications. No. 2 Notre Dame travels to face No. 8 BYU, creating another meeting between highly ranked teams. No. 6 Alabama also faces a difficult challenge against No. 14 Tennessee.
Those games could dramatically reshape the rankings before the second half of October.
Georgia currently controls the top position. However, this season has already demonstrated how quickly that advantage can disappear.
Oregon entered the year with championship expectations and is now unranked. The next contender to stumble could experience a similarly dramatic fall.
