Transfer quarterbacks are dominating the top of PFN’s college football QB rankings midway through the 2026 season.
All five of the highest-graded quarterbacks in PFN’s QB Impact metric entered their current programs from somewhere else, and several have completely changed the trajectory of their careers in the process. Miami’s Darian Mensah leads the group by a substantial margin, but Gio Lopez, Conner Weigman, Aidan Chiles, and Michael Hawkins Jr. have all emerged as major reasons their respective teams have exceeded expectations.
PFN college football analyst Max Chadwick broke down the five highest-graded quarterbacks in the country based on PFN Impact. Here is his top five entering the second half of the season.
5) Michael Hawkins Jr., West Virginia
PFN QB Impact Grade: 91.6
Michael Hawkins Jr. has found a much better fit at West Virginia than he did earlier in his career at Oklahoma. Rich Rodriguez has built an offense that takes advantage of Hawkins’ athleticism, and no quarterback in the country has been more productive on the ground.
Hawkins has rushed for 749 yards this season, the most among FBS quarterbacks. His passing production had been much more modest until his breakout against Cincinnati, when he delivered easily the best performance of his career.
Hawkins completed 25 of 33 passes for 464 yards and three touchdowns in West Virginia’s 45-42 win while adding 77 rushing yards and two more scores. That gave him 541 total yards and five touchdowns in one afternoon.
For the season, Hawkins has thrown for 1,519 yards with 10 touchdowns and just one interception. Chadwick views his development as one of the better transfer stories in college football, particularly after Hawkins struggled when given starting opportunities at Oklahoma.
The fit matters. Rodriguez has never been shy about building his offense around a quarterback’s legs, and Hawkins gives West Virginia exactly the type of athlete needed to make that approach work. What happened against Cincinnati also showed there may be significantly more passing upside available than the Mountaineers had previously needed from him.
4) Aidan Chiles, Northwestern
PFN QB Impact Grade: 92.3
Aidan Chiles arrived at Northwestern with plenty of experience but without the résumé of an elite college quarterback. His stops at Oregon State and Michigan State produced flashes, but not the type of consistency that suggested he’d become one of the highest-graded quarterbacks in the country.
That has changed quickly in Evanston. Chiles has helped Northwestern reach the AP Top 25 while taking dramatically better care of the football than he did earlier in his career.
Through his first six games with the Wildcats, Chiles completed 71.4% of his passes for 1,172 yards and nine touchdowns without an interception. He kept the interception column clean against Michigan State in Week 7, completing 18 of 27 passes for 226 yards while adding a rushing touchdown in Northwestern’s 24-21 road win.

That gives Chiles 1,398 passing yards and no interceptions through seven appearances. His improvement as a decision-maker has accompanied legitimate production as a runner, including seven rushing touchdowns.
Chadwick called Chiles one of the season’s best stories because this version bears little resemblance to the inconsistent quarterback seen earlier in his career. Northwestern hasn’t simply gotten respectable play at the position. Chiles has developed into one of the primary reasons the Wildcats are relevant in the Big Ten race.
3) Conner Weigman, Houston
PFN QB Impact Grade: 92.4
Conner Weigman once looked like a potential high-end NFL Draft prospect at Texas A&M. The former five-star recruit never consistently lived up to that projection with the Aggies, but his move to Houston has given his career a second life.
Weigman has thrown 20 touchdown passes against only two interceptions this season, giving him the most passing touchdowns among Power Four quarterbacks and one of the best touchdown-to-interception ratios in the country.
His latest performance was also one of his best. Weigman completed 24 of 30 passes for 343 yards and a career-high five touchdowns as Houston beat Oklahoma State 35-32. He also rushed for 52 yards, another example of the mobility that has given the Cougars additional options within their running game.
Houston is 6-1, and Weigman has now thrown at least three touchdown passes five times this season. The Cougars’ offense has topped 500 yards in three games, with Weigman’s combination of downfield production and mobility driving much of that success.
For Chadwick, that’s what makes Weigman’s resurgence so notable. The physical talent that made him a coveted recruit never disappeared, but Houston has finally received the consistent production that Texas A&M never got from him.
2) Gio Lopez, Wake Forest
PFN QB Impact Grade: 94.1
Gio Lopez’s college career has already taken him from South Alabama to North Carolina and now Wake Forest. His latest stop has been by far his most productive.
Lopez has helped turn Wake Forest into one of the biggest surprises in college football. The Demon Deacons are 6-1, with their only loss coming against Miami, and Lopez has become one of the nation’s most efficient quarterbacks.
He added another four touchdown passes in Wake Forest’s 41-7 win over California, completing 16 of 23 attempts for 267 yards without an interception. Through seven games, Lopez has thrown for 1,947 yards, 17 touchdowns, and only one interception while adding 254 rushing yards and six scores on the ground.
His rushing production gives the Demon Deacons another dimension, but the ball security may be even more impressive. Lopez has consistently generated explosive offense without putting Wake Forest in danger with turnovers.
Chadwick also viewed Lopez’s success as validation after an uneven season at North Carolina. Whatever went wrong for the Tar Heels hasn’t followed him to Winston-Salem. He has instead become one of the central reasons Wake Forest has climbed into the national rankings and remained in the ACC race.
1) Darian Mensah, Miami
PFN QB Impact Grade: 99.9
No quarterback is particularly close to Darian Mensah in PFN’s grading model right now.
His 99.9 QB Impact grade sits 5.8 points ahead of Lopez at No. 2, which is a remarkable gap this deep into the season. Chadwick considers Mensah not only the best quarterback in college football but a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate.
“If it’s not Jeremiah Smith, the Heisman Trophy, I’d probably give it to Darian Mensah,” Chadwick said.

Mensah’s efficiency explains the enthusiasm. The Miami quarterback has completed 80.8% of his passes through six games, which leads the nation. He is averaging 294 passing yards per game with 18 touchdowns against just one interception and owns a 203.94 passer rating.
Even his first interception of the season didn’t do much to slow Miami in its rivalry game against Florida State. Mensah completed 23 of 34 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns as the Hurricanes survived a 43-35 double-overtime game to remain unbeaten.
Before that game, Mensah had completed 112 of 133 passes through Miami’s first five contests. He wasn’t simply completing an extraordinary percentage of throws by living entirely underneath, either. The Hurricanes entered the Florida State matchup averaging more than eight yards per offensive play and more than 330 passing yards per game.
Mensah transferred to Miami after starring at Duke, and the move has elevated both him and the Hurricanes. Miami has one of the most productive offenses in college football, and Mensah’s command of the passing game has been the biggest reason.
There are plenty of accomplished quarterbacks around the country, but PFN’s grading system currently sees a clear No. 1. Through the first half of 2026, Mensah has separated himself from the field.
