The No. 1-ranked Texas suffered a painful loss when Sooners kicker Tate Sandell converted a field goal as time expired. The game-winning kick followed quarterback Arch Manning’s second interception of the contest, which gave Oklahoma an opportunity to secure the win.
Manning’s first interception proved costly. Oklahoma’s Peyton Bowen returned the pick 42 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, helping the Sooners take a 24-17 lead. Oklahoma also capitalized on a blocked punt, with Dakoda Fields recovering the ball in the end zone for another touchdown.
Those special-teams and defensive scores allowed the Sooners to build their lead without relying heavily on their offense. Oklahoma scored just one offensive touchdown during the game.
Manning completed 19 of 31 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns, but his two interceptions contributed to the Longhorns’ downfall. His final turnover came with 19 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, when the Sooners intercepted him near midfield at its own 49-yard line. Sandell subsequently converted the decisive kick.
Although he entered the game with a 4-1 record, Manning has faced his fair share of challenges so far in the 2026 season. He ranks 69th in expected points added per dropback among 136 qualified FBS quarterbacks, according to TruMedia.
Texas also leads the SEC in three-and-out percentage this season, but head coach Steve Sarkisian has indicated that he will retain play-calling responsibilities.
The Longhorns will have an opportunity to respond when they host Florida next Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for noon ET. However, their schedule becomes more demanding afterward, as they face No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 17 Mississippi State, No. 14 Missouri and No. 10 LSU in four consecutive weeks.
Simmons’ message places the responsibility on Texas to correct its mistakes as the team prepares for a daunting stretch.
