Now it’s real. It’s no longer about hype or hypotheticals.

Now it’s up to the 13 men and women of the College Football Playoff selection committee to make sense of it all.

It is here where I remind you of committee chairman Hunter Yurachek’s flippant response last year to as big a question ever faced by the CFP. What to do with Ole Miss if coach Lane Kiffin leaves before the playoff begins?

TOPP THOUGHTS: Ohio State issues don't end at QB injury. Arch Manning is another problem

WINNERS, LOSERS: Nebraska, USC headline college football Week 9

Yuracheck, Arkansas’ athletic director, used a viral TikTok response to explain the process.

Hunter, babe, there’s millions on the line here. Tighten up.

Before the chairman leads the room for another season, we’re here to provide some sanity and seriousness with the USA TODAY Sports Playoff Predictor. We’re deep in the throws of a wild, unpredictable season that isn’t slowing down soon.

Curt Cignetti, arguably the best coach in the game, nearly blew it for defending national champion Indiana. The Big Ten, meanwhile, is in turmoil, its best team suddenly vulnerable with a backup quarterback.

BAD MOVES: LSU played a dangerous game with the SEC. Now the bill is coming due

WEEK BY WEEK: College football has an overreaction disease. And nobody is immune

Then there’s the SEC, where as many as eight teams have legit CFP resumes. If, that is, you buy the we’re the SEC and you’re not routine.

Fortunately, the Miami or Notre Dame question will end this week, unlike last year's never-ending debate. So we've got that going for us.

Hands and feet in the car, everyone. It’s a bumpy ride through the November games to remember.

Latest CFP rankings predictions

  1. Miami: A weak schedule, yet two late-game escapes in the past three weeks (Florida State and North Carolina). We’re about to find out if the Canes are legit. In theory, anyway. Next: at Notre Dame.
  2. Georgia: The offense isn’t beautiful. It’s not even efficient. But that defense — whoa, buddy. Good luck moving the ball on that group. Next: at Ole Miss.
  3. Indiana: Maybe there aren’t significant problems at IU. Maybe the Hoosiers are simply getting everyone’s best shot. Welcome to the elite, fellas. Next: vs. USC.
  4. Utah: If you had any doubt, check out the Cincinnati game. A week after the Bearcats whipped Texas Tech, Utah was up 42-6 — at halftime. Next: vs. BYU.
  5. Kentucky: We’re all waiting for UK to fall, but when? This could be the last hope for all the doubters. Maybe, just maybe, UK is Indiana, circa 2024. Next: at Tennessee.
  6. Texas: It’s almost fitting, really. The Ohio State game cost Texas in 2025, and could be the deciding factor to reach the CFP in 2026. If Longhorns are going to lose again, it can’t be this week. Next: at Missouri.
  7. Ole Miss: A now-or-never game for the Rebels, who have looked really good (LSU, Missouri), and really bad (Florida, Texas) — and may not be able to sustain another loss. Next: vs. Georgia.
  8. BYU: I don’t want to be a conspiracy nut, but BYU has been on the favorable end of some significant Big 12 officiating gaffes. The Big 12 better have its best crew for the Holy War. Next: at Utah.
  9. Alabama: The great unknown in the SEC. Just how good is Alabama, which dismantled Kentucky in September — and then October arrived. And it has been ugly. Next: at LSU.
  10. LSU: Tigers have played two games of significance (Ole Miss, Kentucky), and lost both. But there’s obvious talent, and the offense is getting dangerous. Next: vs. Alabama.
  11. Notre Dame: This is it, the game Notre Dame has pointed to since not being selected to last year's CFP. Time to walk the walk. Next: vs. Miami.
  12. Boise State: The injury to star QB Maddux Madsen looks bad, and we’ll know more early this week. Without him, this is a different team — even with Max Cutforth’s big game in win over Texas State. Next: at Colorado State.
