Imagine finding out that Caitlin Clark was sitting just a few feet behind you while you are playing a college basketball game. That was apparently the experience Illinois freshman Quentin Coleman had during the Fighting Illini’s recent matchup against the Penn Quakers. His reaction when he found out about the WNBA superstar’s presence resulted in a starstruck moment that has now gone viral on social media.
Both Coleman and freshman forward Zavier Zens were, in fact, unaware that Caitlin Clark was in attendance. They only found out during the postgame press conference when an interviewer asked whether Clark’s presence might have influenced their performances. A video of the exchange was subsequently shared on the Fighting Illini Athletics YouTube channel.
“Wait, wait, wait. Caitlin Clark was in the building. Why was she here? Yo, I got to tell my sister, bro,” Coleman said, with visible surprise and excitement on his face.
“It’s crazy. I did not know she was here. That’s crazy,” Zens added.

Speaking of their performances, according to Coleman, Caitlin Clark would perhaps have found Zens’ performance impressive, as the freshman forward knocked down four of his eight three-point attempts in the game.
“Yo, Caitlin Clark. I mean, shoot. I mean, for him (Zavier Zens), he was shooting lights out. She shoots lights out. Yeah, I guess he thought that. So, dang. She just brought the aura in the room,” Coleman said.
Caitlin Clark made the surprise appearance at the Illinois Fighting Illini versus Penn Quakers men’s basketball game alongside her longtime boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, who has a direct connection to the Quakers.
Clark’s boyfriend is the son of Fran McCaffery, who is the head coach of the Penn Quakers men’s basketball team. In fact, Caitlin Clark and Connor sat directly behind the Penn bench during the game to support his father’s squad.
Beyond that connection, both Caitlin Clark and Connor also played their college basketball careers at the University of Iowa, making them familiar with the State Farm Center and the Illinois Fighting Illini program as longtime Big Ten rivals. In short, any support Clark might have had during the game was likely for the Penn Quakers, who unfortunately ended up on the losing side.
The Fighting Illini delivered a dominant performance, finishing the game with a commanding 112-70 victory. It was a performance that had both freshmen, Quentin Coleman and Zavier Zens, at the centre of it. Coleman ended the game with 19 points on an efficient 8-of-9 shooting, alongside three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Zens, in the same vein, delivered 18 points, alongside three rebounds.
With that win, Illinois has now won its first two games of the regular season and will be looking to continue the streak when it faces the Texas Tech Red Raiders in its next game. As for the Penn Quakers, the loss means they have kicked off their season with a defeat in their first game. They will be looking to bounce back when they face the Howard Bison in their next game on Monday, November 9.
This is the first time Caitlin Clark has attended a Penn Quakers men’s basketball game. Her boyfriend’s father, Fran McCaffery, became the head coach of the Quakers in 2025. Prior to taking the Penn job, he spent 15 seasons coaching the Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball team.
Her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, however, also has an established professional career in basketball coaching and player development. He serves as an assistant coach and player development assistant for the Noblesville Boom, the NBA G League affiliate of the Indiana Pacers. And because the Noblesville Boom play in the Indianapolis metropolitan area, McCaffery’s job allows him to remain in the same market where Caitlin Clark plays her home games for the WNBA’s Indiana Fever.
