It’s October, the heart of college football season, but also the start of preseason college basketball, so now is a great time to take a closer look at the Kentucky Wildcats’ 2026-27 schedule.
While no official strength-of-schedule rankings have been released yet, NCAA.com analyst Andy Katz has Kentucky’s schedule ranked as the 9th toughest in the country, second amongst SEC teams behind Arkansas, which ranks fifth.
The Wildcats’ schedule offers a little bit of everything: primetime neutral-site games, rivalries, a demanding SEC slate and a regular-season finale against the national title favorite.
One criticism is the lack of marquee non-conference games at Rupp Arena, with Louisville being the only preseason ranked opponent Big Blue Nation will see at home before SEC play. In an era when college athletic departments are looking for ways to generate more revenue, neutral-site games will only grow more popular. For Kentucky and other premier programs, that will be the reality most seasons.
With this schedule, KenPom projects Kentucky at 20-11 and 9-9 in the SEC, which would mark a fifth straight season with double-digit losses and a ninth-place conference finish, tying 2025 for the worst finish in program history.
Of course, expectations are higher, and the Wildcats have the roster to surpass those projections.
Let’s take a closer look at the Wildcats’ schedule this season and break it down month-by-month.
Note: Opponent preseason KenPom rankings are in parentheses.
November: Early Tests
- 11/3: Manhattan (316)
- 11/6: James Madison (15o)
- 11/10: Kansas (Champions Classic) (8)
- 11/13: Northern Arizona (296)
- 11/16: Grambling State (317)
- 11/20: Indiana (Lucas Oil Stadium) (47)
- 11/27: Wichita State (90)
It won’t take long to see what this Kentucky team is made of. After two ‘warm-up’ games to start the season against Manhattan and James Madison, the Wildcats will take on Kansas. Both teams will play exhibitions against ranked teams, but this will be the first real regular season test for each team.
A lot of attention will be on Tyran Stokes, who picked the Jayhawks over Kentucky and will be the highest-projected NBA draft prospect on the court. A projected lottery pick, Stokes could certainly raise the ceiling of the team, but there are more question marks surrounding the Jayhawks roster than Kentucky’s at such an early point in the season.
Later in the month, the Wildcats will play Indiana in the state of Indiana since 2011, not in Bloomington but at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. After missing the NCAA Tournament last season, the Hoosiers built a deeper roster that should make the field. Kentucky will be favored, but could face some trouble with their interior size and physicality.
The Wildcats close out the month with Wichita State, who are an NCAA Tournament-caliber team, picked to win the American Athletic Conference.
This is a seven-game slate Kentucky will be expected to come out of 6-1, if not 7-0.
December: Three Top ACC Opponents
- 12/2: @ Virginia (ACC-SEC Challenge) (15)
- 12/5: Appalachian St. (257)
- 12/8: Bryant (304)
- 12/12: Louisville (17)
- 12/19: North Carolina (CBS Sports Classic) (37)
- 12/22: Sacred Heart (315)
- 12/28: Gardner-Webb (350)
Kentucky’s December schedule is highlighted by three ACC opponents, including two rivalry games.
The Wildcats kick off the month by traveling to Charlottesville to play a Top 15 KenPom Virginia team that will be picked to finish top three in the ACC. Returning nearly 60% of their production from a 30-win team a season ago, the Wildcats will be challenged by their frontcourt.
After a pair of games against opponents ranked outside of the top 250 in KenPom, the Wildcats will face the most expensive roster in the country and in-state rival Louisville. Both Mark Pope and Pat Kelsey are going into high-pressure seasons, and one will get the upper hand in the series.
The last marquee game to end the month comes against North Carolina in the CBS Sports Classic. Led by new head coach Mike Malone, who comes from the NBA, the Tar Heels will play a much more modern style than they played under Hubert Davis. They also have one of the more intriguing backcourts with Terrence Brown, who averaged nearly 20 PPG and 4 APG at Utah last season, and 6-9 Neo Avdalas with great playmaking skills at his size.
At the least, the Wildcats need to go 1-2 between the three ACC opponent games. If they are able to go 2-1 or 3-0, Kentucky could find their way into the Top 10 and have a strong non-conference resume before the start of SEC play.

January: The SEC Grind Begins
- 1/2: @ Oklahoma (29)
- 1/5: Ole Miss (38)
- 1/9: @ Missouri (48)
- 1/13: LSU (62)
- 1/16: Vanderbilt (13)
- 1/20: @ Mississippi St (69)
- 1/23: Tennessee (18)
- 1/30: @ Texas (10)
The SEC has become the best conference in college basketball, leading or tying for the most NCAA Tournament bids four seasons straight. As Kentucky enters January and SEC play, this will be when their season will truly begin to take shape, and they should have a known identity.
The Wildcats have to capitalize on the opening stretch of SEC play. While featuring two road games, they are not expected to play a ranked conference opponent until Vanderbilt on January 16th, at home. Starting with that game, the Wildcats will play three of four contests against some Top 20 KenPom opponents, including Tennessee at home and Texas on the road.
That said, Mark Pope has dropped unexpected games in January the last two seasons. The SEC is as difficult now as it has ever been, if not more so, but at some point, Kentucky needs to return to beating programs they are supposed to beat. A successful month for the Wildcats would be 5-3 to 6-2.
February: NCAA Seed Defining Stretch
- 2/2: @ Ole Miss (38)
- 2/6: Alabama (9)
- 2/10: South Carolina (93)
- 2/13: @ Tennessee (18)
- 2/16: @ Georgia (46)
- 2/20: Arkansas (20)
- 2/23: @ Vanderbilt (13)
- 2/27: Auburn (25)
The February stretch will determine Kentucky’s NCAA seeding. If KenPom’s ratings hold similar to the NET rankings, seven of the eight games will be Quad-1 matchups, with South Carolina being the exception. Meaning nearly every night, the Wildcats will have the opportunity to better their resume.
Rivalry games against Tennessee and Arkansas will headline the month, but Mark Pope is still looking for his first win against Alabama, who will have Brandon Garrison this season. Road games against Ole Miss and Georgia cannot be overlooked.
There is not a ‘let up’ stretch in this part of the schedule, and with Kentucky’s midweek bye coming in late January, the Wildcats need to be hitting their stride at this part of the season.
If Kentucky takes care of business up to February, they won’t be punished too much by losing Quad-1 matchups, but if they want to contend among the top of the SEC standings and a 4-seed and up in the NCAA Tournament, they need to go at least 5-3.
March: A Final-Four Caliber Test
- 3/3: Texas A&M (19)
- 3/6: @ Florida (2)
Only two games to play to end the regular season in March, Kentucky’s NCAA Tournament resume will be nearly complete, but both contests will give them tournament-caliber tests.
Led by Bucky McMillan in his second season, the Aggies are looking to build on an NCAA Tournament win and fourth-place SEC finish in 2o26. A preseason KenPom Top 20 team, Texas A&M is a team capable of surprising people for a second straight season.
Then there’s Florida, the preseason No. 1 team and national title favorite. The Gators return four key players from their 2025 national championship team, including former Wildcat Denzel Aberdeen. Thomas Haugh will be one of the favorites for preseason player of the year, while Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu lead the nation’s best frontcourt. The Gators will give Kentucky a Final Four-caliber test in the regular season finale.
My Prediction: 22-10 (10-8 SEC)
