No. 1 Georgia hosts Auburn in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. After dominating Alabama physically, the Bulldogs could embarrass the Tigers.
The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry returns to Athens this Saturday as No. 1 Georgia (6-0) welcomes Auburn (3-2) to Sanford Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. ET showdown on ESPN.
And this matchup could get ugly quickly.
Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs are coming off an impressive 20-17 road victory over Alabama, while Auburn suffered a disappointing 24-14 loss at Tennessee.
Georgia has also won nine consecutive meetings against Auburn, including last year’s 20-10 victory in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Georgia: The Bulldogs Are Built DIFFERENT
Georgia might have delivered its most impressive performance of the season against Alabama.
Despite missing its top two running backs, Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens, the Bulldogs rushed for 206 yards against one of the SEC’s most talented defenses.
Dwight Phillips Jr. stepped up in a major way, while Bo Walker provided additional production in the backfield.
Quarterback Gunner Stockton was outstanding, completing 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards while accounting for two touchdowns.
Through six games, Stockton has thrown for 1,298 yards and 14 touchdowns, completing more than 76% of his passes.
Defensively, Georgia held Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell to just 185 passing yards while recording four sacks.
With Chris Cole, Raylen Wilson, KJ Bolden, and Ellis Robinson IV leading the defense, Georgia has the personnel to completely overwhelm Auburn’s offense.
Auburn: Can the Tigers Even Keep This Competitive?
Auburn enters Saturday with serious questions surrounding its offense.
Quarterback Byrum Brown has thrown for approximately 1,055 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. While he’s dangerous with his legs, his decision-making has been inconsistent.
Against Tennessee, Brown rushed for 107 yards but threw two interceptions in the 24-14 loss.
Wide receiver Keshaun Singleton has emerged as a reliable target, recording 29 receptions for 322 yards.
However, Auburn’s biggest concern might be its inability to consistently stop the run.
Tennessee rushed for 237 yards against the Tigers last weekend. That’s a terrible sign considering Georgia just rushed for more than 200 yards against Alabama without its top two backs.
If Auburn can’t contain Georgia’s rushing attack, this game could be over by halftime.
How Each Team Wins
For Georgia, the formula is simple: establish the running game, control the line of scrimmage, and force Brown to beat its defense through the air.
Stockton should have plenty of opportunities to attack Auburn’s secondary once the Tigers begin loading the box.
Defensively, Georgia must contain Brown’s mobility and force him into obvious passing situations.
For Auburn, everything starts with avoiding turnovers and creating explosive plays. Brown must use his legs to extend drives, while the Tigers’ defense needs to generate pressure on Stockton.
Auburn cannot afford to fall behind early and become one-dimensional.
Prediction
I don’t see this game being particularly competitive.
Georgia is coming off an emotional victory over Alabama, but Kirby Smart has built a program that rarely overlooks inferior opponents, especially rivals.
The Bulldogs should dominate the line of scrimmage, and I expect another massive rushing performance regardless of whether Frazier and Bowens return.
Stockton should have an efficient afternoon, throwing multiple touchdowns while Georgia’s defense forces Brown into at least two turnovers.
Expect the Bulldogs to establish a commanding lead before halftime and eventually begin rotating younger players into the game.
Final Score: No. 1 Georgia 41, Auburn 10
Georgia dominates its oldest rival, improves to 7-0, and continues looking like the team to beat in college football.
