Just two weeks ago, some felt there was a chance that the Alabama Crimson Tide could be the second-best team in the country. Or, at the very least, that they were national championships contenders.
Fast forward to now, and Alabama's College Football Playoff hopes are suddenly in jeopardy.
The Crimson Tide lost at home to Georgia by a score of 20-17 in Week 6, which was forgivable. The Bulldogs were the top-ranked team in the country at the time, and that game could have gone either way.
But then, Alabama went into Tennessee this past Saturday and got slapped around by the Volunteers, losing 26-10 while generating just 201 yards of offense.
Suddenly, the Crimson Tide are sitting at 5-2, and ESPN's Heather Dinich currently has them on the outside looking in when it comes to the CFP picture.
Dinich has Georgia, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Tennessee as the SEC's playoff teams at the moment, which is quite the jarring outlook for 'Bama.
Things looked so promising for Alabama early on, as the Crimson Tide were dominating their opponents for a stretch before the wheels came off against Tennessee.
Yes, Alabama was without No. 1 wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams as well as starting center Racin Delgatty, but I'm not sure the presence of either player would have helped the Crimson Tide earn a win.
Keelon Russell was under constant duress, and Tennessee's secondary played an absolutely tremendous game. Not only that, but 'Bama simply could not get stops when it needed them during the second half.
Now, Kalen DeBoer's squad suddenly finds itself in very serious danger. The Crimson Tide have no margin for error, and they don't even have many more opportunities.
Alabama plays just one ranked team over its last five games: No. 18 LSU on Nov. 7. That would certainly represent a nice win, but otherwise, the Crimson Tide's schedule is fairly easy between now and the end of the regular season.
The Tide will host a disappointing Texas A&M team next week. On Nov. 14, they will face a 3-4 Vanderbilt club on the road. Alabama will then host Chattanooga on Nov. 21 before ending the season with the Iron Bowl against Auburn.
Alabama absolutely must go undefeated the rest of the way, and even then, it might even have to get some help in order to punch its CFP ticket.
Of course, there is still a very sizeable chance for the Crimson Tide to reach the playoff, but they can't afford any more missteps.
